3 Modern Villas in Hakone: Relax in a Japanese Home with Tatami Rooms
- Written by: Ran Tanaka
Villas in Hakone offer a perfect retreat for those looking to enjoy time with family and friends in one of Japan's famous hot springs areas. Hakone (箱根), a popular tourist destination in Kanagawa Prefecture, boasts dynamic natural landscapes like Lake Ashi with views of Mount Fuji and the geothermal wonders of Owakudani. Its popularity is partly due to the convenience of being just an hour and a half from Tokyo.
Recently, there has been an increase in villas designed in traditional Japanese style. Here are three cottages notable for their Japanese-inspired, modern architecture where one can experience the essence of Japan.
1. Taisho Modern Villa 'Zen': Time Travel to Japan of 100 Years Ago
Approximately a 5-minute walk from Ohiradai Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway, you will find a two-story traditional Japanese cottage known as Taisho Modern Villa 'Zen'.
This renovated Japanese cottage embraces the concept of "Taisho Modern." Taisho Modern, or Taisho Roman, refers to the culture and fashion influenced by Western culture during the Taisho era (1912-1926). The combination of Japanese and Western elements in patterns and color schemes remains popular to this day.
With its antique and vibrant interior, you'll experience a fresh and unique stay, as if you've slipped back in time to old Japan.
The second-floor bedroom is a tatami room. When you slide open the shoji screens, you can enjoy the picturesque view of the beautiful Hakone mountains.
The maximum occupancy is 11 people. In addition to the living room with a bar counter, there are three bedrooms available.
The owner can communicate in English and is happy to provide information about local hot springs and hidden gems. With the guidance of a knowledgeable owner familiar with Hakone, you can enjoy exploring the town's hidden treasures. Free Wi-Fi is also available.

2. 'Hakone Sengokuhara Gran Terrace': Experience Japanese Winter with a Kotatsu in a Tatami Room
Located approximately 30 minutes by bus from Hakone Yumoto Station and a 3-minute walk from the 'Sengokuhara' bus stop, you'll find 'Hakone Sengokuhara Gran Terrace (Ashigarashimo-gun - House / Vacation STAY 46655),' a spacious villa with a generous garden.
This single-story cottage features a connected living room with a kitchen and a tatami room. Even when accommodating a large group, you'll have plenty of space to spread out. In the traditional tatami room, reminiscent of a ryokan, you can also use a kotatsu during the colder seasons.
Although the bedrooms feature tatami flooring, beds are provided, ensuring comfort for those who may not be accustomed to futons. You also have the option to spread out futon bedding in the tatami room, allowing you to choose your preferred sleeping style.
You have the option to dine at nearby restaurants or prepare your own meals using the kitchen, which is fully equipped with essential appliances such as a microwave, rice cooker, electric kettle, cookware, and tableware. There's also a convenience store just a 1-minute walk away, making it very convenient.
The management company can assist you in three languages: Japanese, English, and Chinese. If you have any concerns during your stay, you can contact them by phone. Free Wi-Fi is also available.

The appeal of these cottages lies in the freedom to use the spacious area, the ability to enjoy your trip in a home-like atmosphere, and the absence of contact with other guests. If you're looking to stretch out and enjoy a private space with your family or friends, why not consider choosing a traditional Japanese cottage in Hakone?
