Extravagant Character Osechi for 2022: Enjoy Disney-Themed New Year’s Dishes & More!
- Written by: Ran Tanaka
In Japan, traditional dishes to celebrate the New Year’s Holiday are called osechi. These dishes are prepared around the beginning of the year as a way to wish for the health and prosperity of one’s family as well as any other guests you might dine with.
Some osechi dishes are kamaboko - pink and white fish cakes; datemaki - a sweet rolled Japanese omelet; and sweetened black soybeans. In addition to being delicious, these dishes are known throughout Japan for bringing good luck.
Recently, ordering osechi instead of making it at home has become popular, with many unique osechi boxes being sold by various companies. Among these, character osechi, which use famous animated characters as a motif, has become a stand-out option.
Osechi featuring characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Disney princesses, Winnie the Pooh, and Detective Conan is exciting just to look at! Which osechi box would you choose?

The plain wood used for the osechi box is perfect for storing dishes for a traditional Japanese New Year. The First-Ever Detective Conan Osechi: Filled with Fun Surprises Fans Will Rave About!
The online shop Ringbell is offering an osechi box centering around the explosively popular detective manga series, Detective Conan. Bursting with the series charm, it’s fittingly called Detective Conan Osechi.
The Detective Conan Osechi box is two-tiered and filled with a total of 37 dishes. Although it carefully incorporates the traditional aspects of Japanese osechi, it’s also a fun-filled box where you can solve the mystery of what ingredients are used in each dish!
The first tier has a total of 24 standard osechi dishes. This includes fish cakes, datemaki, and tazukuri - small dried sardines cooked in a sweet soy sauce mixture.
You’ll find the fish cakes in both the shape of Conan’s soccer ball as well as the infamous APTX 2869 pill. In addition to this, carrots and zucchinis are cut out into the shape of Kaito Kid’s playing card symbols, and nerikiri (a traditional Japanese dessert made by kneading white bean paste, yam, and glutinous rice flour), is shaped into Conan’s voice-altering red bow tie. Here you can enjoy a variety of ingredients that are eye-catching as well as delicious!
On the second tier, you can find 13 Western-inspired dishes. This includes the lemon pie Ran made for Shinichi, shrimp in a sweet and sour red chili sauce inspired by Shuichi Akai (due to Akai also meaning red in Japanese), and a specialty from the author-Gosho Aoyama’s hometown of Tottori Prefecture called steamed Daisen ham. Here you can feast on a range of Western-style dishes.
What’s more, it’s not only the food that stands out! On the second tier’s lid, you can find an original design featuring Conan, Ran Mori, Ai Haibara, Shuichi Akai, and Rei Furuya. With the Conan characters blending in with the surrounding traditional Japanese colors and patterns, the entire design gives off a mysterious atmosphere. This box even includes a notice from Kaito Kid himself!
The furoshiki wrapping cloth that comes with the osechi box is navy-colored and features famous Detective Conan characters. Furthermore, you’ll find New Year-inspired motifs in the chic, patterned design. The voice-altering red bow tie is purposefully put in the corner of the furoshiki to add a pop of color when using it to wrap something. This item will not be used to wrap the osechi box and will be delivered separately.
Furthermore, each osechi box comes with a pair of festive chopsticks with a drawing of one of Detective Conan's characters inside! Also, some of the dishes found in the second tier of the osechi box come in a dish with a design featuring Ran Mori, Ai Haibara, Shuichi Akai, or Rei Furuya. Since even the osechi are inspired by your favorite characters, you can try solving the mystery of how each dish leads back to the Detective Conan series.
