Access to Busta Shinjuku is easy. Leave JR Shinjuku Station via the South Exit and cross the pedestrian crossing right in front. There are large signs with directions in English, so it’s easy to understand even for Non-Japanese speakers.

The terminal is directly connected to the New South ticket gates, so simply pass through them and take the escalator on the left. On rainy days, you won’t even need an umbrella to transfer from the train to the bus.

The majority of facilities and services gather on the 4th floor, including the main bus stations, the information counter, ticket counters, waiting spaces, shops, and so on. The information counter is always at the ready to help you in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

During business hours (7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.), the friendly staff will help you with all sorts of questions and problems. On the 3rd floor are mostly taxi stands, bus arrivals, sightseeing information counters, and so on.

Check the status of bus lines, timetables, and other convenient information on the tables installed at the information counter (available in English, Chinese (simplified and traditional), and Korean).

Tickets need to be bought online, at the Busta Shinjuku reception desk, at ticket machines, and so on, before getting on the bus. The terminal is rather crowded around 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., so plan for long queues in front of ticket counters and ticket machines.

Staffed ticket counters with separate desks for each destination. Brace for rather long queues during peak hours. Even if you have a reservation, your seat might be given away to guests waiting for cancellation, so be sure to pick up your ticket 10 minutes in advance.

These ticket machines sell various kinds of express bus tickets, using reservation systems such as highwaybus.com, kousokubus.net, Japan Bus Online, and Limousine Bus.

However, the ticket machines may not accept all kinds of bank notes, so please contact the operating company regarding details (support available in English, Chinese (simplified and traditional), and Korean).

Express bus tickets can also be bought online on the websites of the different operating companies (please refer to the individual companies to see which lines can be booked online).

In some cases you will have to print the ticket yourself while others simply ask to show the confirmation email – the system differs by company, so make sure to read the details at the time of purchase.

Some lines can also be booked at convenience stores and via other reservation methods, varying by line and company.

When you purchase a ticket, make sure to check the bulletin board promptly to confirm departure and bus stop so that you didn’t buy a wrong ticket by mistake.

Because so many buses leave from Busta Shinjuku, a lot of them have the same destination and departure time. It’s easy to take the wrong bus by mixing up the bus stop or departure time.

Check the route number, bus company, departure time, and destination on your ticket carefully. Also, as bus stops and departure times are not uniform, make sure to confirm exactly from where your bus departs and at which time it is leaving.

Read the QR code with your phone and you can check all the details on your device as well. As you’re heading for the bus stop, check the signs on the pillars and on the floor. They’re color-coded, so it’s easy to see exactly where you need to go. On top of that, an experimental bus location system is currently in place, providing real-time information on certain express bus lines.

Further expansion in regard to bus routes and companies is planned as well. This information can be checked on a smartphone, as well as on the large bulletin displays on the 3rd and 4th floor.

The 4th floor is divided into four areas. Area D, where buses depart for the Kansai and Hokuriku areas, is the furthest from the waiting room. If you’re taking such a bus, be aware that getting there can take a while. Also, the departure area may change on the day of departure and night bus departures aren’t necessarily area-specific, so make sure to double-check via the bulletin board.

The buses actually arrive at their stop about ten minutes before the actual departure. It’s best to arrive at your bus stop ten minutes early as well. Areas C and D are rather far from the waiting space, so plan an extra few minutes to get there.

The coin lockers on the 4th floor can be found within a passage next to a convenience store (Family Mart), at the end of the passage, and next to the escalator going down to the 3rd floor. There are plenty of coin lockers available, however, they tend to be quite full on Saturdays and Sundays.

The coin lockers come in three sizes (small, medium, large) and charge for two hours: large costs 300 yen, medium costs 200 yen, and small costs 100 yen. They can be used up to 72 hours.

This is the Tourist Information Center Tokyo, located on the 3rd floor of Busta Shinjuku. It offers various convenient sightseeing information about Tokyo and the Kansai areas, but also route guidance and hotel recommendations.

At the back of the tourist information is Sagawa Transport’s Shinjuku Service Center. It offers a luggage storage and a variety of other convenient services, including delivery to your hotel or the airport. Each piece of luggage stored costs 800 yen per hour. If you have a lot of luggage that is particularly big, it’s convenient to drop it off at the Shinjuku Service Center to not have to carry it around with you all the time.

A Seven Bank ATM can be found inside the waiting area, while a Japan Post Bank ATM is inside Family Mart.

Busta Shinjuku also has a Family Mart convenience store. There, you’ll find a variety of travel goods and other necessities that you might need for your trip.

Hours: 3:30 a.m. – 1:30 a.m.

Just behind the information counter is a spacious waiting area offering 146 seats. If you still have some time to kill, sit down and leisurely wait for your departure. Keep in mind, however, that there may not be free seats during peak hours.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout Busta Shinjuku. “Shinjuku-Bus-Terminal_Free_Wi-Fi” in particular is a free service for international tourists in Japan. It is available in six languages (English, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Korean, Thai, French) and you simply need to register your email address to get started. If you don’t know how to set up the service, check the manual at the information counter.

“The Miyage Shop” is a souvenir shop inside Busta Shinjuku. Browse through the rich selection of snack and sweet souvenirs to find one you like! The selection is not only made up of things from the Tokyo area but also handles select goodies from the entire Kanto area.

NEWoMAN is a shopping facility that’s directly connected to Busta Shinjuku. You’ll find bakeries and cafés on its 2F Ekisoto area and various sweets shops on the 2F Ekinaka area. Find a nice bento box or pastry delight to savor during the trip!
