Adorable Japanese Character “Pompompurin” Gets a Maid Makeover in Harajuku: On-site Report
- Written by: Ran Tanaka
Pompompurin Cafe, one of the epic Sanrio character cafes, reopened in April 2021 on Harajuku’s iconic Takeshita Street with the maids from Akihabara’s legendary “@Home Cafe.”
The combination of cute maids and the adorable Pompompurin is a kawaii-overdose we couldn’t resist! From the original menu to a commemorative photo, we’ll let you in on everything you can do at this one-of-a-kind Harajuku experience!
Pompompurin Cafe: A Warm Welcome From the Maids!
“Irasshaimase! Welcome to Pompompurin Cafe!” As expected from a maid cafe, all the impeccably dressed maids dashed out to greet us alongside a giant rendition of Purin himself. Matching the color of pudding, the maids were all beautifully dressed in an authentic yellow and brown maid outfit.
“Pom! Pom! Purin Cafe!” the maids chanted while gesturing with each hand like they’re squishing a marshmallow - their signature pose! If you could resist their charm before, you’ll surely melt to this!
Pompompurin Cafe acts as a place where “Purin and friends can hang out and feast on pudding!” In addition to the maid outfits, all the interior decoration is colored yellow and brown. With a series of adjustable tables, the layout of the store changes to fit customers' needs.
From the lamps, walls, tables, and even seats, Purin, Muffin, Whip, and other characters are hidden in almost every nook and cranny!
After being shown to your seat, the enchanting maids will provide you with a menu while explaining how to order. If you can’t decide, feel free to ask for a recommendation!
Perfect for Instagram! Pompompurin Cafe’s Kawaii Menu
Pompompurin Cafe’s original menu boasts three selections of food, desserts, and drinks, with nine items in total. No matter what you choose, each appears fantastic on camera, like they were specifically designed for social media!
We started with the maids’ recommendation, the “Soufflé Omurice: Sleeping Soundly on a Fluffy Futon,” which came out incredibly in our photos. The maids themselves tenderly named each item!
To celebrate Purin’s birthday on April 16, the special “Happy Birthday Purin-kun Parfait” (1,700 yen, including tax) will be available until April 30. Each customer will also be given a free badge with an original design (until stock runs out).
Get Your Photo with the Maids and Purin!
While finishing your meal, don’t forget to take a commemorative photograph! At the in-store photo space, diners can don headbands and pose with Purin plush dolls while taking as many photos as they desire. If you use your own smartphone or camera, this service is completely free.
For an extra special souvenir, you can have a polaroid taken for 550 yen (including tax). If you want one together with a maid, it’ll cost an extra 330 yen. There’s a chance you’ll also receive a handwritten memo from a maid herself, making it well worth the price!
You’ll also get to choose a sticker and mount to protect your photo. For such a memorable, one-of-a-kind experience, a unique souvenir like this is essential! While bilingual support is not yet available, the veteran maids from “@Home” are used to serving foreign customers, making communication a breeze.
For those who can’t get enough kawaii, the cafe sells a huge range of Purin merchandise, including stationery, key holders, and other daily essentials.
Pompompurin Cafe Keeps Customers Safe Against COVID-19!
When entering the cafe, guests will be required to use the provided alcohol spray and have their temperatures taken with advanced thermometers. Maids will also be wearing masks.
While you’ll miss their lovely smiles, the maids will still chat and ask questions like “how does it taste?” and “are you having fun?” ensuring it still retains the traditional maid cafe atmosphere. While there is plenty of physical space separating you, the tender care and loving affection from the maids will warm your heart!
Harajuku’s Newest Hit! Pompompurin Cafe is the Ultimate Kawaii Experience
Purin and friends have strived alongside the maids of “@Home” to create the definitive Harajuku “kawaii” experience! Located along the famous Takeshita Street, Pompompurin Cafe is the ideal location for a quick refresher during shopping escapades. So next time you’re checking out the fashion of Harajuku, don’t forget to stop by Pompompurin Cafe!
