Description
Situated at the easternmost entrance of Aokigahara, known as ”Sea of Trees.” When Mount Fuji erupted from its northwestern flank volcano, Nagao-san, in 864 AD, the red-hot lava (Aokigahara Maruo) descended between other flank volcanoes, creating this twin-tunnel cave. The ring-shaped cave, 153 meters long, has been designated a Natural Monument of Japan. You can tour this fantastical cave covered with ice throughout the year and see the Ice Wall, Ice Pond and Hole to Hell. Particularly at the Ice Pond, 21 meters down, you can feel wonders of nature from up close — ice pillars created from frozen water drops, and clusters of basaltic lava rocks. A 30-minute bus ride from Kawaguchiko Station on the Fujikyu Kawaguchiko Line. A bus for the Lake Kawaguchi area (called Retro-bus) is also available.
