Choosing the right transportation can save both time and money when exploring Morioka and the wider Iwate Prefecture in summer.

For long-distance travel, the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku Area) is one of the best options. It offers five consecutive days of unlimited travel on JR trains and Shinkansen services, and often pays for itself with a single round trip between Tokyo and Morioka.

For local sightseeing, renting a car is highly recommended. While central Morioka and major hubs like Ichinoseki are easy to navigate by train, scenic outdoor spots and sprawling venues such as Koiwai Farm, Ark Tategamori, and the rural landscapes of Tono are much easier to access by car.

A practical strategy is to use the JR East Pass to reach a major hub like Morioka Station or Ichinoseki Station, then pick up a rental car for exploring the region's beautiful countryside.

Koiwai Farm marks the 130th anniversary of Kenji Miyazawa's birth with several hands-on installations spread around Makibaen. Visitors can experience an escape-game activity inspired by The Restaurant of Many Orders, displays inspired by Miyazawa’s works, and other sensory installations combining poetry and music. This exhibition continues all the way through November, meaning it'll still be in full swing during your fall visit, making it the perfect activity for September!

On September 12, Koiwai Farm stays open after dark for team bub.'s GIFT 2026 in IWATE, a night event built around roughly one million soap bubbles released across Makibaen. Lighting and live artists are incorporated into the bubble display, turning the farm's open grounds into an evening spectacle from 6 PM to 9 PM.

There are also other regularly scheduled hands-on activities (fees apply) where you can interact with the farm animals, including horse and sheep feeding (300 yen per cup of food) and horseback riding experiences (1,000 yen per person; height and weight restrictions apply, so please see official website for more information).

Baeren Brewery's largest annual brewery event returns to the Kitayama factory with Oktoberfest, running from September 20 to 22, with each paid ticket including the event's original mug and access to the beer program. Food stalls serve dishes to pair with Baeren beer, making the brewery itself the center of the festival. There are also lighter scheduled days immediately before and after the main event, with September 19 as Pre-Festival Say and September 23 as an extension day, with individual beers and food sold on site instead of the main all-you-can-drink format.

The three main days are advance-ticket only, with 450 tickets available per day and no same-day ticket sales. Non-drinking companions can enter free when accompanying a ticket holder. There is no visitor parking at the brewery during the main event, so Baeren schedules a paid shuttle from Morioka Station West Exit for visitors arriving by train.

Yukko Morioka and Baeren Brewery combine sauna culture, local beer, food, and live music for a one-day collaboration on September 13. The 4,000-yen ticket includes up to four hours of Baeren beer, admission to Yukko's baths, and an original event sticker, with the special venue open from 11 AM to 3 PM.

Beyond the drink package is Meat no Fugane, which serves freshly fried menchi-katsu and frankfurters, while Unme no Su brings more food to enjoy with the beer, and Iwate-based reggae artist Allen Kajita performs a special live set. Yukko's men's and women's outdoor baths also feature a beer-scented event bath for the day, while limited original T-shirts and towels are sold at the venue.

Tickets are sold through Yukko Morioka, Baeren shops, and Peatix while supplies last. Ticket holders can also add in-building rest access for 1,000 yen on the day.

The 3rd Night Wine Festival
Ohasama kicks off its September wine season with an evening festival centered on local wines, food, and live music. Visitors can sample wines from Ohasama producers, including commissioned labels made for local growers, while food stalls provide plenty to pair with them throughout the night.

The program also includes live music from Funky Beat Injection, a stamp rally with prizes, and a wine quiz paired with a short lesson from local community revitalization coordinator Manami Sakemoto. With free entry and everything purchased individually, it is an easy way to spend an early autumn evening in one of Iwate’s best known wine producing areas.

Ohasama Wine Festival
Later in the month, Ohasama’s main wine festival brings a larger harvest celebration to Edel Hill. Local wine takes center stage, joined by traditional performances, festival activities, food stalls, and plenty of opportunities to sample the area’s winemaking culture.

Highlights include grape stomping by the festival’s Wine Girls, Hayachine Take Kagura, limited barrel wine tastings, a stamp rally, and the festival’s lively wine mochi toss. Free shuttle buses from JR Ishidoriya Station and temporary parking areas also make it easier for visitors to enjoy the wine without worrying about driving afterward.

Every Saturday afternoon, Zaimokucho transforms into one of Morioka’s most atmospheric local markets. Around 400 meters of the shopping street close to traffic as stalls selling fresh produce, prepared foods, local beer, regional specialties, and seasonal goods fill the road. Yoichi Market has been running for decades and has now passed more than 1,580 editions.

The official site publishes monthly maps with regular vendors, spot vendors, and related events, so the lineup can shift from one Saturday to the next even though the market follows the same weekly schedule, so visitors are encouraged to check out the website before visiting.

Amihari Yakushi Shrine holds its annual festival on September 5 at Kyukamura Iwate Amihari Onsen, at the southern foot of Mt. Iwate. The 2026 festival begins with the annual shrine ceremony, and includes a performance by the Osawa Sansa Odori Preservation Society and the customary tossing of red and white mochi at 11 AM. Food stalls are scheduled to sell festival favorites including yakitori, okonomiyaki, and yakisoba.

Several special offers are available for the festival as well. Admission to the Yakushi no Yu day use hot spring is reduced to 350 yen for adults and 150 yen for elementary school students, and special unlimited bathing coupon books for the main building and hot spring facility will be sold. The Amihari Onsen Sky Lift is also half price for adults and free for elementary school children and younger on September 5, giving visitors another way to spend the day around the mountain resort after the festivities end.

Morioka’s major autumn festival brings several days of shrine ceremonies, ornate floats, street processions, and horseback archery to the city in mid-September. The festivities center on Morioka Hachimangu but spread into the downtown area as elaborately decorated floats make their way through the streets accompanied by musicians and festival groups.

Among the major highlights are the Hachiman Kudari procession, the evening Grand Float Picture Scroll parade through central Morioka, and yabusame mounted archery at the shrine on the final day. With daytime processions, illuminated floats, and traditional shrine rituals all packed into the same week, it is one of the best times of year to experience Morioka’s festivals.

Hanamaki Festival fills the city center with three evenings of elaborate floats, mikoshi, dance, kagura, and traditional performing arts. The decorated furyu floats are one of the biggest attractions, but the festival also brings Hanamaki Bayashi dancing, shishi odori, kagura gongenmai, and large mikoshi processions into the streets around Uemachi. ISHIGAKI MUSIC FESTIVAL turns central Morioka into a citywide live music venue for the day, with performances spread between Morioka Castle Site Park and locations throughout the downtown area. The 2026 lineup brings together major acts including HEY-SMITH, THE BAWDIES, The Cro-Magnons, ROTTENGRAFFTY, Kyuso Nekokami, Kariyushi58, Non & the tears of knight, and many more.

The main ISHIGAKI and AZUMAYA stages take over the castle park, while free Machinaka stages bring music into shopping centers, public spaces, and sightseeing areas around the city. With food vendors scattered around the festival grounds as well, it is easy to spend the day moving between performances while exploring central Morioka at the same time.

The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles bring one of their official first team Pacific League games to Morioka on September 2, facing the Orix Buffaloes at Kitagin Ballpark. This is the Eagles’ once yearly game in Iwate, and the 2026 edition has been expanded into a full festival themed evening with local performances, pregame entertainment, stadium food, giveaways, and fireworks alongside the baseball.

Local Sansa groups Iwate Sansa no Kai Kato-ke and Sanbonyanagi Sansa Tonan Taiko Preservation Society perform on the EAGLE STAGE, followed by the Tohoku Golden Angels and a talk appearance by comedian Takuhiro Kimura of Tenshin, who also takes the mound for the ceremonial pitch. Families can also look out for the local mascot race featuring Iwate Grulla Morioka’s Kizuru, Iwate Big Bulls’ BULLZO, Miyagi mascot Musubimaru, and Rakuten’s Clutch!

September gives soccer fans two chances to see Iwate Grulla Morioka at home, with fixtures against Azul Claro Numazu and FC Maruyasu Okazaki at Iwagin Stadium. The two matches fall at different times of day, giving visitors the choice of an afternoon or evening game depending on the rest of their plans.

Iwate Big Bulls open their first B.ONE home season with a two game Tohoku matchup against the Yamagata Wyverns at Morioka Takaya Arena. As the club’s home opener, the weekend is being treated as a season launch event, with special activities and giveaways planned around the games.

Ihatov Music Festival brings two days of live music and art to central Hanamaki, with performances taking place both inside Nahan Plaza and outdoors beside Hanamaki Station. The event welcomes performers across a wide range of genres, ages, and levels of experience.

Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen can get a close look at how Gege Akutami created the hit manga when its major touring exhibition arrives at the Iwate Museum of Art. The exhibition explores the series’ digital production process through Akutami’s own commentary, tracing how its story, characters, and illustrations developed from initial ideas into finished pages.

The exhibition follows the manga rather than the anime and includes material from later parts of the story, so anime-only visitors or those behind on the stories should expect spoilers. Studio Ghibli returns to the historic Kikusui-kan building at Osawa Onsen for an exhibition that brings the studio’s world into one of Hanamaki’s most atmospheric old buildings. After studying Western learning, gunnery, and mining, Oshima built a Western style blast furnace at Ohashi in present day Kamaishi and achieved continuous pig iron production there in 1857.

The exhibition follows his work beyond ironmaking as well, including his involvement in the development of mines around Japan and his efforts to promote technical education during the country’s transition into the modern industrial era. Curator talks, lectures, and a hands-on casting workshop are also scheduled during the exhibition period.

Hanamaki City Museum’s fall special exhibition explores the boom in printed visual culture that accompanied the growth of publishing from the Taisho era into early Showa. Book covers, illustrations, posters, and other printed works show how artists including Takeji Fujishima, Hisui Sugiura, Goyo Hashiguchi, Yumeji Takehisa, and Kiyoshi Kobayakawa helped shape the stylish visual language of modern Japan.

The exhibition moves through themes ranging from ukiyo-e influence and Art Deco to children, urban life, strange beauty, emerging design, and mass culture. There is also a fitting Hanamaki connection through material related to the 1924 first edition of Kenji Miyazawa’s Spring and Asura, while workshops and lectures during September provide additional ways to explore the era’s graphics.

Ark Tategamori leans into the Halloween season with an evening buffet built around themed food, costumes, and the farm’s signature Tategamori Kogen Pork. Iwate Prefectural Museum turns the spotlight on fossil replicas and the scientific work behind making accurate copies. The exhibition explains why replicas are essential for research, education, and museum displays when original fossils are too fragile, valuable, or difficult to move.

It also draws a clear distinction between legitimate scientific replicas and fabricated “fake fossils” intended to deceive. Material from the museum’s Sanriku Hope Heritage digital archive and outreach projects broadens the topic further, showing how fossils and geological records can be documented and shared beyond the museum itself.

November is the final month for most of Koiwai Farm’s Kenji Miyazawa anniversary installations. After November 28, Yoichi closes for winter until next spring.

Founded in Morioka in 1871, Asabiraki is a historic Iwate sake brewery rooted in the traditions of the Nanbu Toji, one of Japan’s best known schools of master brewers. Its brewery tour introduces both sides of the production process inside the Showa Asahi Brewery, where visitors can see traditional hand brewing techniques alongside modern brewing equipment.

After the tour, stop by the brewery’s Jizake Bussankan shop for complimentary sake tasting and a selection of brewery exclusives, seasonal releases, sake cups, Iwate snacks, and freshly bottled unpasteurized sake. November 15 marks the final day of the temple’s 900th anniversary special viewing at Sankozo, where visitors can see a normally hidden Buddhist image through either a dedicated ticket or a combined admission option. With chrysanthemums, illuminated foliage, and the rare Buddhist image viewing all overlapping, early November is one of the most eventful periods of the year at Chusonji.

The November edition of Ohasama Kagura Day features Otsugunai Kagura, one of the traditions associated with the Hayachine Kagura cultural landscape. This regular public performance is designed to give visitors an extended opportunity to watch the regional kagura tradition over several hours. Miniature photographer and artist Tatsuya Tanaka brings Mitate no Kumitate to Iwate for the first time, filling Morioka Civic Cultural Hall with around 160 playful miniature scenes built from everyday objects.

Tanaka’s work relies on mitate, or seeing one thing as another, transforming familiar items through changes in scale and perspective. Tiny figures interact with household objects, food, stationery, and other materials to create humorous scenes that reward close looking.

Fall in Morioka and central Iwate moves from September’s street festivals, wine events, and live music into October’s illuminated foliage, farm programs, and seasonal outdoor events. By November, the focus shifts toward Hiraizumi’s temple traditions, kagura, late autumn sports, and exhibitions that carry the cultural calendar toward winter. With many of the season's events clustered around Morioka, Hanamaki, Tono, and Hiraizumi, a fall trip gives visitors plenty of sightseeing options both within the city, and around the surrounding towns.
