According to folklore, the name "Akita" originated from when Abe no Hirafu reported the area as "Agita" after visiting there in 658 as he explored the Sea of Japan. The prefecture has been a hub for sea transportation from ancient times, and has hosted more international visitors recently as cruise ships stop by at its ports. Akita is also famous for producing delicious rice and sake, and its delicious local foods are another attraction to look forward to.

Best known for Namahage and the Akita dog breed, Akita is also blessed with stunning seas, magnificent mountains and an exquisite natural environment. Also in Akita is Lake Tazawa, which is Japan's deepest lake and one of the country's 100 Most Scenic Spots, owning to how its surface changes color depending on how the sun shines upon it. Akita is also home to many delicious local dishes such as Kiritanpo and Hinaijidori chicken.

From August 3 to 6 The Akita Kanto Festival
Continuing as a tradition since the Edo period, the Akita Kanto Festival is one of Tohoku's three major festivals and also one of Japan's three major lantern festivals. The tall lanterns are made of nine horizontal bamboo poles attached to a single tall vertical bamboo pole above one another, and small lanterns hang from each of the horizontal poles. While the lanterns themselves are stunning to watch, a highlight of the festival is how local people skillfully hold them up with their foreheads, shoulders and hips, called "Kanto Myogi."
