Wakayama Castle

和歌山城

Description

Before it was known as Wakayama, the area was known as “Torafusuyama.” The first to build a castle here was the younger brother of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Hidenaga. Its construction was overseen by the castle-building expert, Takatora Todo. For his achievements in the battle of Sekigahara, Yoshinaga Asano became the lord of the castle; his younger brother Nagaakira was relocated by official decree to Hiroshima. Later in 1619, the 10th son of Ieyasu, Yorinobu, took over the castle. Since then, the castle served the Owari and Mito clans, part of the three houses of the Tokugawa. The castle is a historic landmark.
