Description
This is where Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine was located prior to the massive floods of 1889. Positioned where the Otonashigawa tributary of the Kumano River meets with the Iwadagawa River, the enormous grounds are said to have been home to 12 horizontally-arranged shrine structures. Until the Edo period, you could only enter the shrine upon cleansing yourself in the river water.
