Staying Safe While Having Fun! Universal Studios Japan Combats the Coronavirus Pandemic!

Last updated: 28 September 2020

After a brief shutdown, Universal Studios Japan went from locals-only back to accepting visitors from all across Japan. To help everyone enjoy the world-famous theme park while staying safe, they launched a new series of cute masks featuring beloved characters like Elmo and Snoopy, along with other comprehensive anti-virus measures.

So, is it safe to visit Universal Studios Japan during the pandemic? Let’s see what the ever-popular theme park is doing to combat the spread of COVID-19!

July 20, 2020 – Universal Studios Japan Reopens to Visitors from Across Japan

To slow the spread of COVID-19 after an initial shut down, visitation to the theme park was limited to residents of surrounding Kansai or those with a yearly pass. From June 19, residents of nearby Tokai, Hokuriku, Shikoku, and Chuugoku were also allowed in. On July 20, all restrictions were completely lifted, allowing visitors from across Japan to once again enjoy the park.

To help make things a bit easier for customers during this challenging year, the time period to change the date on pre-purchased tickets was extended (*1) and additional fees dropped. (*2) Additionally, to prevent crowding, the capacity of the park was halved.

(*1) Customers can now change their desired date of entry to the park within 90 days of their originally selected date (normally 30 days). Additionally, Tokyo residents with entry tickets purchased after July 20 2020 can change the ticket’s date anytime within a one-year period.
(*2) From 7/20/2020 until the foreseeable future, the ticket alteration fee (200-yen tax-inclusive) is now free.

The Mask-Free Zone – Combating Heat Stroke While Ensuring Hygiene

Universal Studios Japan is serious about health and hygiene. Every ride and facility is sanitized after use, including seats and safety handles, social distancing is enforced, and safety practices have been strengthened. Guests must wear a mask, undergo a temperature check, use the abundantly-placed hand sanitizer, and practice social distancing. Universal hopes that guests will work with them to ensure everyone has a great time while staying safe!

While wearing a mask is extremely important, customers must take care to avoid dangerous heat strokes. That's why Universal Studios Japan has prepared a 'Mask Free Zone' where you can safely remove your mask and enjoy a breath of fresh air. Adding extra freshness is the nearby restaurant space modeled on San Francisco's iconic Lombard's Landing, which opened on July 3, 2020.
