Don’t miss out on this opportunity to make a Crayon Shin-chan cookie! A detailed report on Hug Museum, a place that you can enjoy with your whole family

Last updated: 23 May 2025

The Hug Museum, run by Osaka Gas—Japan’s second-largest gas company—reopened after a renovation in February 2025, and attracted attention as a spot where families can enjoy a full day of fun. At the facility, you can enjoy making a Crayon Shin-chan cookie, a cookie of a character from an animation series loved by children around the world, as well as also enjoying the many exciting exhibits and interactive play areas. This article will fill you in on some of the highlights of the Hug Museum experience.

What’s the Hug Museum all about?

What’s the Hug Museum all about?

The Hug Museum (hu+g Museum) is a showroom owned and operated by Osaka Gas, created with the vision of being a place where people (humans, "hu") and gas ("g") come together. Being only a short ride from Shinsaibashi and Namba Stations—popular spots for international visitors—this showroom is in a convenient location and is recommended to everyone to visit with family and friends, to come and experience and have a full day of enjoyment using all five senses.

The museum underwent a major renovation to celebrate its 10th anniversary in February, 2025. The reopened museum now has a friendlier and more comfortable atmosphere where you can learn about energy through various hands-on activities.

A highlight event of the renovation is the “giant Crayon Shin-chan cookie-making experience." You can make a giant cookie shaped like the face of Shinnosuke Nohara—aka Shin-chan—the beloved main character of Crayon Shin-chan, a successful animation series not only in Japan but across Asia, such as Taiwan and South Korea. Making this approximately 25 cm wide cookie will be a memorable part of your Japan trip.

Make the Crayon Shin-chan cookie experience your top priority on arrival!

We recommend signing up first for the Crayon Shin-chan cookie-making experience on your arrival at the Hug Museum. Since the cookie will take about an hour to bake, you can use that time efficiently to look around at other attractions.

Also, please note that the giant cookie-making experience is only held at designated times. You can check the schedule on our website or official Instagram account, so it's best to check for details there before your visit.

Reservations cannot be made, so please purchase a ticket for the event held at the time of your choice. Tickets cost 2,000 yen per cookie.

Important notes and information
・You must follow the Hug Museum official Instagram account in order to join the event.
・The entire experience takes about 90 minutes in total, with about 30 minutes to make the cookie, and about 60 minutes to bake it.
・The cookie-making experience is scheduled to continue up to the end of 2025.
・There is no age requirement. However, children in fourth grade and under must be accompanied by a guardian 15 years of age or older.
・Groups are limited to 3 people, including a guardian.
・Siblings in a group may share the cookie. However, if several children require a guardian, each child must individually be accompanied by one guardian.

Although the event is called "cookie-making," you don't need to worry about mixing eggs and flour. Pre-prepared colored cookie dough is provided, so all you need to do is make Shin-chan's face following the example!

Small children will enjoy making Shin-chan's face on the cookie dough as if they were playing with clay. Even if the cookie turns out a little funny, it will still be a great memory for them.

Once your cookie is ready, inform a staff member to have them baked and browned over a gas flame. That’s all for now!

When the cookie has been baked, head back to the cookie corner to pick up your cookie filled with the delicious fragrance of butter! You can also take it home with you in a cute box. The dough prepared by Osaka Gas for cookie-making is infused with a generous amount of rich butter, so it's sure to taste delicious! Please enjoy.

Before you leave, be sure to take a commemorative photo with statues of the Nohara family! You'll have a fun time even just walking around with your cookie in the cute box.

Large Crayon Shin-chan illustrations can be found in front of the elevators on each floor and places like the second-floor terrace. Enjoy taking photos with your children as you go on a Shin-chan hunt!

After its renovation, the Hug Museum has reopened with a variety of fun features and exhibits throughout its floors that combine play and discovery. Have fun learning about energy initiatives while using your five senses. Here are our top five must-see areas for you!

1. PE Pipe Athletic (1F)

This athletic area is made of gas pipes which deliver gas to households. You can find a series of bright yellow polyethylene pipes of different lengths and sizes. This area provides an opportunity for children to use their whole body to play and have fun—tapping on pipes to produce different sounds, crawling through tunnels, and much more!

2. e-methane Factory (1F)

This exhibit involves removing balls just like playing a giant claw machine. Through playing, you can intuitively understand how e-methane, the next-generation energy, works. Once you've gotten the hang of it, it's a piece of cake!

3. Energy Eco Town (1F)

This exciting exhibit is a miniature town with small running cars! There are areas where you can experience wind and solar power generation, and you can actually get on a real emergency vehicle to take pictures! You're sure to have a fun time with this hands-on experience.

4. Grassy Hill Theater (2F)

An open area covered in artificial grass. Stretch and sprawl out to your heart's content and relax as if you were out in the middle of a big meadow.

5. Hanasaku Field (2F)

This is a play area where kids can play safely, designed by BørneLund , a company known for selling top-quality playthings from around the world. A variety of educational toys that stimulate children's creativity by encouraging them to think and use their imagination as they play with them can be found here. (You must follow the official Instagram account to access the area.)
