So, what do visitors to Japan like to buy as their souvenirs, anyway? To find out, we asked Approach, a souvenir shop on the third floor of the first terminal in Kansai International Airport, what tourists love to buy! Some things are mundane to Japanese, but other still are surprising.

Number 1 : Crunchy, Cigar-shaped Cookies, Yokumoku's "Cigar"

Number 1 : Crunchy, Cigar-shaped Cookies, Yokumoku's "Cigar"

The most popular souvenir, regardless of nationality, turned out to be Yokumoku's "Cigare" (box of 14: 972 yen with tax). These cigar-shaped cookies have a rich, buttery flavor and an addictive crunch to them. The skillfully curled shape displays Japanese dexterity well.

Particularly popular is the "Cigare -Japanese Scenery-" package with a fan that has the four seasons of Japan drawn on it. The red and black base gives it the appearance of traditional Japanese urushi coating and an air of classiness.

Number 2: Tasty milky white chocolate, Sugar Butter Tree!

Number 2: Tasty milky white chocolate, Sugar Butter Tree!

Take cereal toasted in sugary butter and sandwich some white chocolate into them to get "Sugar Butter Tree", a popular treat with a powerful buttery, milky flavor. They're very affordable, too - only 690 yen for a lot of ten! If you've got just a bit more before your souvenir total becomes duty-free, give these a shot!

Number 3: Asked for by name, "Hakata Hiyoko Manju"

Number 3: Asked for by name, "Hakata Hiyoko Manju"

Known well even abroad, the chick-shaped "Hakata Hiyoko Manju" (1,080 yen with tax for 9) is sweet red bean paste wrapped and baked in a soft coating.

Number 4: Melts in your mouth, “Kokyu Choco”

Number 4: Melts in your mouth, “Kokyu Choco”

Kokyu Choco (2,268 yen with tax included) is highly popular with visitors from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Its light texture and the way it melts in your mouth in the blink of an eye has enchanted many. Another reason for its popularity is its flavors, Kitashinchi Cocoa and Kyoto Maccha, which have a strong Kansai feel to them.

Number 5: Tokyo Banana Series

Number 5: Tokyo Banana Series

The Tokyo Banana is banana-flavored custard cream wrapped in a soft sponge cake, and word has it that even tourists who don’t visit Tokyo want them as souvenirs. The treat boasts a variety of types, as well. The basic flavor aside, there’s also Ginza Strawberry Cakes (pack of 4 for 560 yen, tax included) and Banana Pies (pack of 15 for 1,080, tax included), which are popular in their own right.

Number 6: A very Osakan takoyaki treat: Tako Patie

Number 6: A very Osakan takoyaki treat: Tako Patie

On the other hand, for something more local and Osakan, Tako Patie (pack of 12 for 540 yen) is gaining popularity. This strange treat starts with the takoyaki flavors of sauce, seaweed and katsuobushi before finishing up with a sweetness of walnut and caramel.

Number 7: Can’t forget ramen!

Number 7: Can’t forget ramen!

There are plenty of tourists who take a liking to the ramen they dine on in Japan and seek to bring ramen from famous or local spots back as souvenirs. To meet those needs, Applause has a variety of ramen stocked, such as Kyoen (1,080 yen with tax included), a set of Kansai’s 3 best ramen restaurants. There are also flavors popular with tourists, such as Ichiran, so be sure to check those out!

And that wraps up our Applause recommendations. There are plenty more souvenirs to check out, so if you want to know more about a certain food in stock, don’t hesitate to ask the staff!
