Description
Located in the heart of Mount Yoshino, Kimpusenji Temple is a central training ground for Shugendo asceticism. The monk En no Gyoja opened up the area at the end of the 7th century. Legend has it that the temple's Zao-do Hall was first built to worship the deity Zao Gongen, after his image was found carved into the mountain's cherry trees. A copper torii gate and a Nio-mon gate standing at pathway to the temple make for an impressive sight. A copper torii gate (Hosshinmon) in front of the temple marks the entrance to the Omine-Okugake Trail.
