Kehayaza Sumo Museum

In the early 4th century AD, two men performed sumo in front of the emperor, marking the first recorded instance of tenran sumo (sumo matches held before the emperor), as noted in Japan's oldest historical text, the Nihon Shoki.

At the Kehayaza Sumo Museum, you'll find an authentic recreation of a sumo ring (or ””dohyo””). The sumo ring is considered sacred ground, so only a select few, like the referee or wrestlers, are allowed inside. However, the ring here is for display purposes, so visitors can walk right onto it and get a feel for its size. You can even purify the ring by sprinkling a handful of salt, just like in a real match, and challenge your friends or family. Anyone can enjoy the feeling of being a sumo wrestler

On the second floor of the museum, an extensive collection of valuable sumo-related materials is on display. Guide tablets in English, French, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean teach about sumo's history and culture.
