Ishibutai Kofun

石舞台古墳

Description

This stone tomb is covered by an enormous rock. The site was once surrounded by a moat, but the embankment has since been destroyed. Designated as a Special Historic Site, it is the country's largest flat-topped burial mound. Visitors are allowed to enter the burial chamber, which once enshrined a coffin. The impressive scale stretches 7.7-meters wide, 3.4-meters deep, and 4.8-meters tall. Its name, specifically ”Ishibutai”, derives from rumors that the flat stone ceiling was once used as a stage.
