Chuguji Temple

中宮寺

Description

Chuguji Temple is Japan's oldest convent. Built for Prince Shotoku's mother, Princess Anahobe no Hashihito, the temple is positioned across from Hokkeji Temple to the west. It is one of seven temples built by Prince Shotoku. The main hall enshrines a principle image of a bodhisattva in the half-lotus position. This bodhisattva has an archaic smile that can bring a gentle sense of joy to the world. The main hall was built in 1968.
