Description

Shosei-en Garden (Kikokutei) is a detached garden of Higashi Honganji, the main temple for the Otani sect of Shinshu Buddhism. It was built in 1641 during the Kan’ei period when Iemitsu Tokugawa donated the land. It has a circular path around a pond and was designed by Jozan Ishikawa. Beautiful flowers are planted throughout this spacious garden that bloom from season to season. The park is dotted with buildings of varying appearance around the pond, Ingetsu-chi. Since it formerly had a trifoliate orange (karatachi in Japanese) hedge, the location is also referred to as “Kikokutei”. Shosei-en Garden was designated as a National Historic Site in 1936.
