Description
The Ujigami-jinja Shrine is where Uji no Wakiiratsuko is worshipped. The shrine actually exists on the grounds of the Buddhist temple, Byodoin, and was at the zenith of prosperity at one point. It is the oldest existing example of Shinto architecture in Japan and a national treasure. Three inner shrine buildings are covered under a singular roof. The inner sanctuary is a national treasure and was constructed during the late Heian period.
