西明寺

Description

This ancient temple is on the banks of the Kiyotaki river and is said to have been established sometime during the Tencho period (824-834). The Shaka Nyorai statue that is worshipped here is stated to be the work of the Kamakura period Buddhist sculptor, Unkei. The statue has been designated as an important cultural property for its depiction of the face of a young Buddha while he was still alive.
