Enjoy a Trip That Feels Like Living in Sapporo as the City Evolves Through Redevelopment

As Hokkaido’s central city, Sapporo is a lively destination that welcomes many visitors throughout the year.

The city has many highlights, including historic buildings such as the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, known as the Red Brick Office, and the Sapporo Clock Tower, beautiful night views overlooking the city from Mt. Moiwa, and the TV Tower rising beyond Odori Park. Winter attractions such as the Sapporo Snow Festival and skiing are also abundant. Local foods made with Hokkaido’s rich ingredients, such as miso ramen, seafood, and Jingisukan, are also popular.

In central Sapporo, redevelopment has been taking place, and new commercial facilities and hotels have opened, bringing major changes to the area over the past few years.

As you compare not only ease of sightseeing, but also room size, whether kitchens and washing machines are available, and the surrounding shopping environment, try to find an accommodation that suits your style of stay.

What to Look for When Choosing a Hotel in Sapporo

With its mix of city sightseeing, food, and seasonal events, Sapporo pairs especially well with apartment hotels.
In winter, when bulky clothing takes up suitcase space, being able to casually do laundry in your room can help reduce what you need to pack.

And if your hotel has a kitchen and dining area, you can pick up Hokkaido ingredients such as crab, corn, and melon at a market and enjoy them back in your room. Compared with a standard hotel, an apartment hotel equipped with a kitchen, washer-dryer, dining table, and space for the whole family can make a Sapporo trip much easier.

Here are three key points to keep in mind when choosing where to stay in Sapporo.

1. A Convenient Location for a Sapporo-Style Stay
  • Popular Sapporo food spots, including famous ramen and soup curry restaurants and Nijo Market, can get crowded. If a popular restaurant is near your hotel, you can swing by when the line looks manageable.

For condominium-style accommodations where guests can cook for themselves, it is also important to have places nearby where you can buy ingredients and daily necessities.

In this article, we looked at access to supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants with long opening hours, and chose accommodations where it is easy to imagine both sightseeing and everyday life during your stay.

Authentic Local Food & Nightlife Experience
While having a kitchen in your room is convenient, experiencing Sapporo’s vibrant dining scene in Susukino is a must. Language barriers can sometimes make ordering at local spots intimidating, but joining an English-guided food tour lets you hop between authentic izakayas and street stalls worry-free!
2. Kitchen and Laundry Facilities for Multi-Night Stays
  • Sapporo is relatively cool by Japanese standards, but recent summers have brought more hot, humid days. In winter, meanwhile, daytime highs often stay below freezing, so proper cold-weather clothing is essential.

Whatever the season, being able to wash and dry the whole family’s clothes using an in-room washing machine helps reduce luggage and makes longer stays more comfortable.

Sapporo gathers delicious ingredients from all over Hokkaido, so having a kitchen and table for simple cooking is another big plus.

For that reason, we focused on room layouts and facilities that make in-room cooking and laundry easy.
3. Room Size and Guest Capacity for Relaxing even with Large Groups
  • As Hokkaido’s largest city, Sapporo has many hotels with relatively small rooms and beds, and guest room capacity is often limited to around three guests.

Here, we selected accommodations that are easy to use for groups of four or more, who may find it difficult to stay in the same room at a standard hotel.

For family and group trips, an apartment hotel with enough beds for everyone and a living room where guests can relax together can make a huge difference.

10 Recommended Places to Stay in Sapporo

Apartment hotels with kitchens, dining areas, living rooms, and washing machines are especially convenient, letting groups of four or more stay together in the same room.

In recent years, Sapporo has also seen more vacation rental-style accommodations that make use of rooms in apartment buildings and similar buildings. For both types, we selected properties in convenient locations.

This large apartment hotel has 66 rooms in total and is located a five-minute walk from Susukino Station. Because it has many rooms, it can be easier to consider even during peak seasons such as the Sapporo Snow Festival. Kitchens, dining tables, sofas, refrigerators, and more are provided, allowing you to spend time as if at home while staying at a hotel.

Choose a room type of over 50 square meters with a washing machine, and you will have a convenient base for longer stays with children or larger groups. Even in rooms without an in-room washing machine, guests can use the paid washing machines in the shared area. Some rooms also have spacious bathrooms, a nice bonus when you want to warm up after winter sightseeing.

Several supermarkets and convenience stores within a ten-minute walk, making the shopping environment especially convenient. The nearest food supermarket, My Basket Minami 6-jo Nishi 7-chome Store, is about two minutes away on foot, and the 24-hour food supermarket Dinner Bell Susukino Minami 7-jo Store is also about three minutes away on foot. It is easy to pick up everything from breakfast bread and drinks to late-night snacks.

There are also plenty of eating-out options. The popular ramen restaurant ”“Ramen Shingen Minami 6-jo Branch,” which often has lines, is about three minutes away on foot, and ”“Keyaki Susukino Main Branch” is about seven minutes away on foot, so you can check out their lines during your stay and drop in when it looks calmer. The area also has many good Jingisukan restaurants, including ”“Sapporo Jingisukan Yukidaruma Gojo Branch,” a local favorite about a three-minute walk away from the hotel.

During the Sapporo Snow Festival, the Odori Park venue is about a ten-minute walk away. Even in heavy snow or below-freezing temperatures, the venue is easy to access, making the location convenient for winter trips to Sapporo. Although it is located in the city, the area is relatively quiet, so it is also good for travelers who prefer to stay outside the livelier Susukino entertainment district.

The standout feature is the spacious guestrooms of over 74 square meters. Some rooms, with a generous 3.9-meter ceiling heights, are equipped with four single beds and six double beds, accommodating as many as 14 guests! Accommodations in Sapporo where more than ten people can stay together are quite valuable, so early reservations are recommended for three-generation trips and larger groups.

All rooms have kitchens, so you can buy ingredients at nearby supermarkets or department stores around Odori and cook for yourself. The nearest supermarket, My Basket Kita 2-jo Nishi 14-chome Store, is open from 7 AM to 11 PM, which is perfect for buying breakfast ingredients and drinks. It is also relatively close to the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market Curb Market, which can be reached in about ten minutes by car, such as by taxi.

After sightseeing around Odori Park or the Maruyama area, you can buy seafood, prepared dishes, and sweets at the curb market or department stores, then gather around the table together at night in the spacious room. Instead of just staying at a hotel, you can feel as though you have rented a large Sapporo base.

This is a strong choice for travelers who want to stay together in one space, even with a large group.

This apartment hotel is located between Susukino and Nakajima Park. It is a four-minute walk from Nakajima-Koen Station on the Subway Namboku Line, and a six-minute walk from Hosui-Susukino Station on the Subway Toho Line, giving guests access to two lines and two stations. The Nakajima Park bus stop for buses bound for New Chitose Airport is also a four-minute walk away, so transportation is especially convenient.

Although the rooms are compact at 27 to 35 square meters, all are functional and equipped with kitchens and washing machines. They are suited to families with small children who value being able to cook, do laundry, and spend time at their own pace rather than looking for luxury facilities.

While the hotel is close to Susukino, which stays lively well into the night, the surrounding area has relatively calm vehicle and foot traffic. Nakajima Park is also nearby, so morning walks or a little greenery between sightseeing stops is a breeze.

Carrot Susukino Store supermarket is about two minutes away on foot, and the convenience store 7-Eleven Sapporo Minami 9-jo Nishi 3-chome Store is also about a two-minute walk away. It is easy to buy extra ingredients, prepared dishes, drinks, children’s light snacks, and more, so shopping needs are easy to handle during a multi-night stay.

The area is also convenient for eating out, with the popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant ”“Kaiten Sushi Pasaru” about 11 minutes away on foot, and ”“Hokkaido Jingisukan Ezoya” about an eight-minute walk away.

During the day, you can walk around Nakajima Park and central Sapporo, then enjoy Hokkaido food in Susukino at night. On days when you are tired of eating out, heat up prepared dishes from a nearby supermarket in your room and take a break while doing laundry. It is not flashy, but it is a good fit for travelers who want to stay in Sapporo like a local.

All rooms come with kitchens and washing machines. Family suites with two bedrooms are also available, and with three beds and two sofa beds, some rooms can accommodate up to ten guests. It is also recommended for three-generation trips or larger groups of friends.

As a Sapporo resident, I especially recommend staying around late April, when the cherry blossoms bloom. The Sosei River, which flows right beside AMS Tower, is small, but it is a cherry blossom spot known to those. You can take photos under the cherry blossoms along the river or watch the petals scatter on the water’s surface.

In spring, walk along the Sosei River. In summer, head to Nakajima Park and Susukino. In winter, view snowy Sapporo from the upper floors. AMS Tower lets you enjoy the city’s seasonal moods while spending time in your room as if at home, with a kitchen and washing machine close at hand.

Useful Information for Traveling Comfortably in Sapporo

Finally, here are some transportation, shopping, and getting-around tips for apartment-style stays in Sapporo.

These points are worth knowing before a family trip or multi-night stay, gathered from the perspective of a Sapporo-based writer.

Use Trains and Buses Wisely from the Airport to the City

From New Chitose Airport, it takes about 40 minutes by train and about 70 minutes by bus to reach Sapporo. Trains are faster, while buses have many stops and may bring you closer to your hotel, so choose based on your itinerary and travel style.

Central Sapporo has three subway lines, as well as streetcars and buses, and if you are not heading out to the suburbs, you can enjoy sightseeing well enough without renting a car.

Winter in Sapporo brings not only cold but also heavy snow. Since walking long distances on snowy roads can be difficult, also check access to stations and bus stops, as well as whether restaurants, supermarkets, and convenience stores are nearby.

Most apartment hotels in central Sapporo do not have dedicated parking lots. In general, it is convenient to sightsee on foot, by subway, or by bus, and use taxis for places that are difficult to reach by public transportation.

If you use a rental car, be sure to also check coin-operated parking lots around the hotel.

Recommended Scenic Day Trip from Sapporo
Staying in a Sapporo apartment hotel for multiple nights makes it easy to take day trips across Hokkaido without moving your luggage. If you want to experience dramatic coastal views, whisky tasting, and historic canals without renting a car, joining a guided tour from central Sapporo is the most convenient choice!

Tips for Shopping Around Sapporo Station

The area from Sapporo Station to Odori Station has a strong office-district feel. There are many restaurants and department stores, but supermarkets are somewhat limited.

By contrast, the Susukino to Nakajima Park area is a bustling district with many restaurants while also having residential pockets, so supermarkets, convenience stores, and small 24-hour supermarkets are relatively well represented.

Nijo Market, which is popular with travelers, is open from around 7 AM to around 5 PM, though hours vary by shop.
Depending on the day’s supply, items may sell out early, so if you want to buy ingredients for dinner, it is recommended to visit earlier in the day.

On Rainy and Snowy Days, Make Use of Underground Passages and Arcades

On rainy days or during snowy periods, make use of the Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Walkway, known as Chi-Ka-Ho, which runs from Sapporo Station toward Odori, the underground shopping street Pole Town, where you can walk from Odori toward Susukino, and the covered Tanukikoji Shopping Street.

These routes are less affected by temperature and weather, making winter travel much easier.

The underground walkway and underground shopping streets have convenience stores, restaurants, apparel shops, and more, and around Odori, you can also access department stores such as Mitsukoshi and Marui Imai from underground.
Tanukikoji Shopping Street has many drugstores that offer tax-free shopping and multilingual support, as well as discount stores such as Gyomu Super and Don Quijote.

It is also convenient when you want to buy daily necessities, souvenirs, or light snacks to eat in your room all at once.

Book Early for Popular Seasons! Choose Your Accommodation After Checking the Surrounding Environment and Facilities

We introduced 10 apartment hotels recommended for family trips and group trips in Sapporo.

Sapporo attracts many travelers throughout the year, but the busiest period is the Sapporo Snow Festival, held every year in early February. In 2026, the Odori Site and Tsudome Site had a combined total of about 2.54 million visitors, attracting many tourists not only from within Japan, but also from overseas.

In years when Lunar New Year overlaps with this period, the number of travelers increases even further, making hotels and flights harder to book. Other busy seasons include Golden Week in early May, a major holiday period in Japan, the Christmas to New Year period, and the summer vacation season from July to August.

Accommodations with kitchens, washing machines, and spacious living rooms, as well as apartment hotels near supermarkets and stations, may become fully booked early.
If there is an accommodation you are interested in, do make an early reservation while also checking the room size, facilities, and nearby shopping environment.
