Otaru Canal

小樽運河

Latest Info

Description

Otaru grew into Hokkaido's gateway port for trade, and its canal was built by reclaiming land along the shoreline, completed in 1923. Unlike most canals, it curves gently rather than running straight, and stretches 1,140 meters end to end. Part of it was filled in during 1986 to make way for a promenade, and the old stone warehouses and factories along the water have since been reborn as restaurants and shops. After dark, 63 gas lamps cast a soft, nostalgic glow that feels quite different from daytime.
