Description
Lake Mashu is a caldera lake famed for having some of the clearest water in Japan, with a deep blue surface known as "Mashu blue." Steep crater walls ring the lake, so there's no direct lakeshore access, but three observation decks offer sweeping views. Because mist often rolls in, it's also called the "Misty Lake Mashu" — its two faces, a crystal-clear blue on sunny days and a dreamlike, cloud-wrapped scene on foggy ones, are what draw travelers here. At dawn, a sea of clouds sometimes spreads across the caldera.
