Tokyo’s Secret Coin Locker Spots: Big Enough for Suitcases!
- Written by: LIVE JAPAN's editorial team
Coin lockers can be found all around Tokyo. It’s not the number of lockers that tends to pose a problem for travelers – it’s the size. Small coin lockers are the most abundant, while medium- and large-size lockers are less numerous and thus also less vacant. This is especially true for coin lockers in busy places, but you still don’t want to drag around your suitcase all over Tokyo, do you?
Let’s take a closer look at the coin lockers of Tokyo’s stations, their sizes, and the many secret storage spots that are just perfect for tourists!
Different Sizes: Find One That Fits Your Luggage

Coin lockers come in various sizes, and the larger the space, the higher the rental fee. But how can you tell if your luggage will actually fit? While locker dimensions and prices vary slightly depending on the railway company, they are generally categorized as follows:
- Standard
- W360 × H320 × D575 mm
- Medium
- W360 × H550 × D575 mm
- Large
- W360 × H840 × D575 mm
- Extra Large
- W360 × H1132 × D575 mm
Secret and Recommended Coin Locker Spots: Always Vacant!
Tokyo’s major stations and downtown areas have a lot of coin locker spots to offer, bust most of them are always crowded. Especially the large and extra-large lockers tend to be taken nonstop. Coin-operated lockers, as opposed to their touchscreen-type counterparts, are usually much less busy. We’ll show you our coin locker recommendations and secret spots at Tokyo’s major stations, to guarantee that you’ll always find a vacant locker!
In the following text, the payment method called “IC card” will mainly refer to the fare cards Suica and PASMO. Other fare cards used outside of Tokyo, such as ICOCA, Kitaca, nimoca, SUGOCA, and TOICA, may be accepted in some cases.
Each company sets its own pricing, but fees typically range from 300 to 1,000 yen. Be sure to check the posted prices carefully before paying!
