Everyone familiar with the Final Fantasy series connects certain memories and emotions with it – which one was your first? Which one was your favorite? Do you remember exploring the dark, yet colorful corners of Midgar’s slums with Cloud, or were you and Tidus the best Blitzball team to walk this planet? Have you maybe just recently sat in a car with Noctis and his friends? Or are you still defending the land of Eorzea from all kinds of danger with seven other friends?
Final Fantasy means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. It has shaped childhoods and guided us through puberty, made us laugh and suffer, fight and ponder. It’s a series like no other – and in 2018, it is precisely 30 years ago that the very first Final Fantasy was released!
Square Enix is celebrating the occasion by holding the “Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Exhibition - Wakare no Monogatari-ten (Stories of Farewell)”, which will take place from January 22 to February 28, 2018, at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi Hills.
Exhibit Highlights
The retrospective exhibit features works themed around different "farewells" in the Final Fantasy universe, depicted not only in visual form but introducing a new "Voice AR" technology as well. Using a handheld, you can hear background music and character voices synchronized to the different portions of the exhibit, with personalized navigation handled automagically.
One portion of the exhibit utilizes a huge 3.9 x 12 m projection in an interactive manner. After jacking in with your headphones, "board" the Enterprise and fly into the world of Final Fantasy! But beware - Bahamut is not far behind! Borrow power from the Crystal and break through the enemy with friends!
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XV Special Exhibits
Released for the first time in Japan, the Final Fantasy VII special exhibit will whisk you away to where we all first met Aerith: the deserted Slum Church. You will be able to freely walk around this building while listening to Aerith’s specially recorded monologue, voiced by Maaya Sakamoto.
Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XV's “Phantom Wedding” exhibit will invite you to the wedding of Noctis and Lunafreya. It will be a completely new way to experience the main story's final scene, and the voice talent lineup is quite special as well - Mamoru Miyano (Ignis), Kenta Miyake (Gladiolus), Tetsuya Kakihara (Prompto), and Tsutomu Isobe (Regis)!
Special Menu & Merchandise
At Cafe "THE SUN" adjacent to the gallery, a specially themed selection of 10 food and drinks will be available for a limited time as well. In addition, a variety of commemorative merchandise will be sold.
If you plan on visiting Tokyo during January or February 2018, this exhibition is an absolute must-see! So long, brave adventurer.
