Visiting Tokyo's Toyosu Market: 6 Recommended Spots for Souvenirs & Gourmet Takeout!
- Written by: Miyu Shimada
Sushi comes to mind when you think of the market! That is probably what many people think, but actually there are many other food items and gifts you can take home with you from the Toyosu Market, too. Here are some souvenirs you may want to buy when you come to the market.
In this article we’ll introduce some food items and souvenirs at Toyosu Market that make great gifts.
1. Mosuke Dango's Kushi Dango
Mosuke Dango is a dango [dumpling and sweet made from mochiko rice] shop established in 1895 and currently operated by the 4th generation owner. It is located on the 3rd floor of the Management Offices area.
Its most popular dango is the Mosuke Dango An (strained sweet bean jam) which costs 341 yen (tax included) for two. (It is also possible to buy just one.) This is certainly the king of dango with its three round dumplings thickly covered in bean jam.
The most popular item in the shop is Kusa Mochi [rice‐flour dumpling mixed with mugwort] that has a perfect blend of mugwort and not-too-sweet bean jam (two for 341 yen, tax included).
Another standard is the anmitsu containing agar; it has been made in the same way for more than a hundred years (460 yen for 1; tax included).
At the front of the shop there are many other Japanese sweets, such as red bean rice, dorayaki [two small pancake-like patties made from castella wrapped around a filling of sweet Azuki red bean paste], and monaka [bean-jam-filled wafers], all certain to catch your eye.
Here are three more colorful high-grade fresh confections. Every month new confections are created having seasonal themes. "As we are located in the market, and being one of the establishments in Toyosu, we happily welcome everyone," said the cheerful proprietor.
Tea is also offered in the shop. A tea service is also provided whereby for an additional 120 yen you can sit and eat the sweets you purchased with a cup of tea.

2. Marutake's Tamagoyaki Sandwich
Marutake is a famous tamagoyaki [Japanese rolled omelette seasoned with mirin and soy sauce] shop that has been in business for more than 80 years. It is a well-known family-run business of the Japanese TV personality Terry Ito. The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Marutake is its thick, rolled omelet (620 yen for large; 320 yen for half; tax included.
*Photo shows the large size).
The unique feature of this tamagoyaki is its soft texture because more dashi [soup stock] is used in its making. “We sell it after it has cooled rather than when it is just made. Letting it sit for a bit brings out the full flavor and it is very delicious.”
We especially recommend the tamagoyaki sandwich made with a large slice of Marutake tamagoyaki. Until now you could only eat this at special events, but here at Toyosu it is always available.
The bread used in this sandwich is specially made by Tsukiji Kimuraya to go with the tamagoyaki.
This is the cheese bread egg sandwich. The cheese bread with cream cheese is especially recommended. The tamagoyaki sandwich has wasabi mayonnaise in it and the cheese bread has a mustard sauce, each is uniquely different but perfectly matched.
For those who want to take home items that can only be eaten in the Toyosu shop, we recommend the Date Roll (470 yen each, tax included; photo shows quarter-size slices of each type). The soft texture of the minced fish paste and eggs goes really well with the rich flavors of the cheese, matcha, and chocolate versions making for truly delicious sweets. These are flavors children especially love.
The shop enjoyed much popularity when it was located in Tsukiji and here at Toyosu you can try even a broader selection of products. Try both the traditional items and new items when you visit.

3. Toyosu Sennen Kojiya's Sake no Mi and Amasake
Sennen Kojiya is a brand launched by the Hakkaisan Sake Brewery in Uonuma. This is the first time a shop has been opened from Toyosu in the market. Malted rice is essential in the brewing of Japanese sake and the malted rice used by the brewery is also used in a large number of products offered for sale.
More than 80 percent of the products offered in the shop are original items and in addition to that, products from the Hakkaisan Brewery in Uonuma, Niigata are also available.
Sake no Mi (333 yen not including tax), the baumkuchen made with sake lees of Hakkaisan, is a moist, sweet cake with a soft hint of Japanese sake. Slices are individually packaged and make good gifts.
Amasake (190 yen, tax excluded), containing only rice malt and water and nothing else, is another popular product.
This amasake is popular because it has fewer grains in it and has a smoother taste making it easier to drink.
In addition to the regular type there is also one that is fermented with lactic acid bacteria (210 yen excluding tax), and another one that is less sweet (190 yen excluding tax).
The shop also recommends its soup made with sake lees from the Hakkaisan Brewery. It is also popular as an emergency provision because it can be eaten heated up right out of the can.
Recently, foods unique to Japan, such as sake and rice malt, have drawn the attention of overseas visitors as well. Product information is displayed in English and in order to provide assistance in other languages, there is a tablet that can be used.
In addition, there are many seasonings made with rice malt and rare types of sake, so please stop by and see if there isn't something here you would like.

4. Grilled salted shrimp, scallops teriyaki, and silver warehou at Hanetai
Hanetai is not only popular with the general public, but also with the people who work in the market. The shop has long sold box lunches and grilled fish in the food sections of department stores.
Here at Toyosu products carefully and specially selected to satisfy the discerning eye of professional fish merchants are offered at reasonably low prices and aimed at such professionals. Professional cooks also shop here.
Not only is the food good, but the prices are attractive, too. Another reason why it is so popular with so many people is because the prices are set at wholesale prices making them considerably lower than elsewhere. About one hundred slices of the popular yellowtail amberjack (209 yen excluding tax) are sold in a day. The plump meat with its good balance of fat is another reason for its popularity.
The plump and savory grilled salted shrimp (459 yen per dish, excluding tax) is especially popular with foreign visitors.
The teriyaki scallops (459 yen per dish, excluding tax) are soft and sweet and rich in flavor.
The main products are fish, but the Iberian pork box lunches are also popular. Only the finest quality Spanish Iberian pork is used. Those working in the fish market also like to eat meat, so the Iberian pork box lunch (650 yen excluding tax) has become a standard menu item.
The tender, stewed octopus box lunch (647 yen excluding tax), made with the famous Ohara brand octopus caught off of Chiba, is offered at a very low price.
The vegetables and boxed bento lunches here are sold at really low prices, so be sure to stop by and buy some. The shop gets very crowded towards noon and the shelves tend to get cleaned out, so you had best come early.

5. Ito Uroko Sells Kanji T-shirts & Toyosu Goods
Ito Uroko was established in 1910 as a shop specializing in boots. You can purchase souvenir items unique to the market such as original T-shirts and hats, as well as boots which almost everyone working in the market wears.
This being a boots specialty shop, the quality and selection of the boots sold here are unparalleled in excellence.
The market floor can become slippery from the fish, so the soles of the boots are specifically designed to prevent that.
In addition, they have good fabric liners that hold up well over daily use and ward off the cold. They can comfortably be worn all day long. That is said to be an important point.
T-shirts printed with various characters are popular with overseas visitors, the most popular being the "fatty" T-shirt (2,380 yen, including tax). The shop prides itself on the quality of all its items, T-shirts and sundries as well, and all of which are promoted for their good practical use.
The embroidery on the hats, such as one depicting a tully truck driver, and other embroidered items are all originals. This is the only shop where you can buy them.
The socks designed as fish are especially popular with foreign visitors. These cute socks (600 yen including tax) make great gifts for all your friends because they don't take up a lot of space.
There are also magnets having sushi and sea life motifs (from 350 yen including tax).
This is one of the few shops in the market that sells gifts, apparel, and other sundries. Here you can probably find a good souvenir of your visit to the market.

6. Ohara Honten Wheat Gluten Chocolate
Ohara Honten, established in 1912, manufactures and sells konjac, yuba [the film formed on the surface of soy milk when boiled], and wheat gluten. It has a long history of being a purveyor of these products to the best restaurants and inns throughout the country as well as to temples. It has been made the same way for more than 80 years and no artificial coloring is used.
The Fusuma Choco [wheat gluten chocolate] is a popular souvenir (500 yen excluding tax). It seems that younger people in particular do not know how to use wheat gluten and yuba in cooking. In order to help familiarize them more, the shop began creating and selling sweets made with wheat gluten which, when mixed with chocolate, gives it a light, soft touch that is very delicious, and it makes a good gift that is very Japanese.
These are the especially popular wheat gluten snack OFU (162 yen excluding tax). It is wheat gluten that has been fried in rice-bran oil and comes in five flavors: black pepper, barbecue, cheese, vegetable, and dark roasted shichimi [a blend of 7 spices].
Ori Yuba (800 yen, including tax, for 200 grams) is yuba that has been dried and folded; it is easy to use in everyday dishes. It is so popular, though, that it is sold out almost as soon as it hits the shelves. There is no need to boil it or immerse it in water; you can eat it as it is.
It is good crunched up and sprinkled on salads, sprinkled on congee made in the leftovers of a hotpot dish, and also as an ingredient in cooked rice. If your timing is right, you might be lucky enough to be there when they have it in stock.
Fusuma Manju (100 yen including tax), sold at the front of the shop, is a wheat gluten steamed bun with a soft, chewy outer layer inside of which there is delicious yuzu-flavored miso bean jam, and this also sells out very quickly.
Wheat gluten is a healthy food item very popular among foreign visitors. Don’t hesitate to ask the shop staff for advice on how to cook with these ingredients because they will be more than happy to tell you.
