Tasting the Port of Yokohama: the Three Best Western-Style Restaurants

Last updated: 30 March 2017

The first places where Western cuisine has arrived to Japan were the many ports - and the port of Yokohama is one of them. Delicious Western-style dishes can be savored in the numerous little, charming restaurants dotted all around the port town. Taste the nostalgic charm of another era!

A Hamburger Steak with History

A Hamburger Steak with History

Yoshoku Kimura is serving delicious dishes to locals and visitors ever since 1938, when it was still called "Lunch Counter" - yoshoku is the Japanese word for Western-style cuisine, by the way. This marks the restaurant's 67th birthday in 2016 and its long history of Western cuisine, having been owned by the same family for three generations.

As already hinted at, Yoshoku Kimura's specialty dish is the hamburger steak which does call a lot of fans its own. Every day, around 300 plates of this delicacy are being served - but what makes Yoshoku Kimura's hamburger steak so delicious? The patties are fried one day before being served and stored in the fridge, allowing the meat to really soak in the flavor of all the spices and ingredients. Another factor is the demi-glace sauce which is made with three-year old plum liquor, complimenting the taste of the hamburger steak just perfectly.
Served on a shell-shaped iron plate, the hamburger steak is so incredibly soft and juicy, you don't even necessarily need a knife to cut it - a spoon or fork will do! The slightly sour original demi-glace sauce is particularly well rounded by the egg served with the patty.

If you're looking for a side dish, we highly recommend the crab cream croquette for 1,790 yen, made from steamed snow crab. Simply enjoyed with homemade mayonnaise or ketchup, the full-bodied dish is crunchy on the outside and creamy in the inside. Be sure to try Yoshoku Kimura when in the Port of Yokohama!

The Best Pasta Napolitan of the Port Yokohama!

The Best Pasta Napolitan of the Port Yokohama!

The restaurant Center Grill is nestled away in Noge's back alleys, the neighborhood around the Port of Yokohama. Having opened its doors in 1946, it has a long history of serving one of Japan's favorite Western-style dishes: Pasta Napolitan. The noodle dish, which has a lot of fans as a very reasonably priced but also very satisfying meal, is said to have originated in Yokohama itself.

The Spaghetti Napolitan, costing diners a mere 720 yen, are served on a stainless steel plate and are sprinkled with powdered cheese. With a thickness of 2.2 mm, the noodles are pleasantly firm to the bite and fit the savory ketchup sauce nicely. The reason for their firm texture is the fact that the pasta is stored for an entire night after being boiled, giving them an entirely different firmness than al dente pasta, for example. The Napolitan sauce consists of the classic roast ham, green pepper, onions, and mushrooms, tasting as nostalgic and amazing as you'd expect it to.

Another recommendation is the "Hama Lunch" set for 1,050 yen, consisting of omelett rice (omurice), chicken cutlets, and salad, nicely arranged on one plate.

The Port of Yokohama's Oversized Omurice Guarantees for Happiness

The Port of Yokohama's Oversized Omurice Guarantees for Happiness

Restaurant Grill S swears on its Western cuisine since over 60 years, having gained many a fan over the time. This popularity is a rather visible one, as people gather at Grill S no matter what time of the day, enjoying the rich menu and amazing flavors of the dishes - one highlight is the demiglace sauce, which takes an entire two weeks before it's ready to be served!

Another popular menu item is the omelette rice, or omurice in short, which is served in an unbelievably large portion. 300g of rice and a total of four eggs are required for this unique dish, finished with plenty of ketchup. Don't be afraid of the size, however, because once you start eating, you won't be able to put down the spoon! The sweetness of the sauce, the mildly sour rice, and the salty omelett on top blend together wonderfully for an amazing culinary experience!

For a more meaty experience, we highly recommend the grade A5 wagyu steak, made from the very best domestic beef. This luxurious gourmet experience is offered for a relatively reasonable price, thus having gained a huge following among the locals of Yokohama. The sirloin steak can be savored for 5,400 yen, served with both demi-glace and soy sauce, both making for an excellent finish.
