The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is one of the three major festivals held in the Tohoku Region. However, like many events this year, the 2020 festivities were unfortunately canceled. The good news is, you can still join the celebration at Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya's Aomori Nebuta Festival! (Available for a limited time).
Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya is a famous hot spring resort located in Aomori. Here, not only can you enjoy the experience of staying in one of their luxurious guest rooms, but you can also take part in their lively festival. It'll feel as if you had attended the actual matsuri itself!
The Nebuta Room: This Guest Room Isn't Just for Sleeping!
At Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya, you can fully immerse yourself in the culture of Aomori, from listening to the dialect, to participating in the festival, to enjoying the food. The Aomori Nebuta Room is a Nebuta-themed guest room established in April 2019, and it will help you do just that!
A three-dimensional nebuta float adorns the ceiling and the walls are painted in a similar theme in this fantastic guest room, truly replicating the power you'd feel at the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri. A stay in this guest room is bound to be such an exciting and memorable time, you won't even want to sleep!
Limited Time Only! Celebrate Aomori Nebuta Festival for 2 Days & 1 Night!
From July 24th to November 29th, 2020, Aomoriya is holding a limited-time Nebuta Itinerary, where you can enjoy celebrating Aomori Nebuta Matsuri over the course of 2 days and 1 night. The main event may have been canceled this year, but Aomoriya has created a way for you to join the fun and festivities of Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, including four festival highlights: the Nebuta floats, Haneto dancers, Hayashi musicians, and Nebuta-shi craftspeople.
The incredible Nebuta Room is a guest room featuring real Nebuta floats. Nebuta floats are 3-D, doll-shaped lanterns made of Japanese paper and wire. The theme of Aomoriya is based on the history of ancient Tohoku, which you can see through the guest room design featuring three legendary heroes: Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, Aterui, and Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Their legends have been passed down in Tohoku for generations. From the entrance and all the way into the main room and the bedroom, you will feel the tremendous power of the Nebuta.
One of the highlights of the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is the Haneto dancers, wearing hats adorned with flowers, white yukata with red or pink sashes on their sleeves, and yellow belts around their waists.
There are even Haneto costumes available in the Nebuta Room that you can wear yourself! Footprints are printed on the floors of the corridor, so you can even practice the dances!
A unique intercom plays the popular festival chant, "Rassera!" adding more to the authentic festival atmosphere. You might even forget that you are in your own room!
Another experience you can enjoy right from your own room is playing Hayashi music with the teburigane (traditional Japanese hand cymbals) available. A lecture video will teach you how to use the hand cymbals, including the tapping rhythms and shouts. Even absolute beginners will enjoy playing along!
Nebuta mask-making kits are also available in guest rooms. Experience hands-on what goes into creating a Nebuta for yourself!
Live Performance Show with Hayashi Music
Aomoriya also holds an exciting live Aomori Nebuta Matsuri performance. The staff participates as Hayashi musicians, so you can enjoy the same breathtaking performances of hand cymbals, flutes, and drums as if you were at an actual festival.
Per coronavirus prevention guidelines, admissions to the venue are limited, and seating layouts ensure social distancing.
Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya's Strict Coronavirus Policies
The staff at Aomoriya are making thorough efforts to prevent new coronavirus infections every day. Guests' temperatures are checked at check-in, and sanitizing alcohol is provided in all guest rooms for disinfection. Partitions panels are installed at the front desk. Guest rooms, as well as hotel premises, are cleaned regularly with alkaline electrolyzed water, ensuring thorough hygiene management.
Also, to prevent crowding, you can check the congestion levels of the public baths via your smartphone, and restaurants allow guests in at spaced-out intervals.
The Nebuta Celebration Plan was developed with adoration for the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, which was sadly canceled for 2020. So this year, why not enjoy the excitement by celebrating the Aomori Nebuta Festival at Aomoriya instead?
