Japanese traditional performing arts like Kabuki and Noh have their own unique beauty. There is a show where one can casually experience the graceful world of traditional performing arts that is popular with foreign visitors.
This time we’ll cover REVUE JAPAN, a Japanese dance show of a theater company composed only of woman based in Osaka Shinsaibashi.
What kind of Show is REVUE JAPAN?
Revue shows were created in Europe as a theater entertainment, and it has become known in Japan since 1910. The lively show that combines singing, dancing, and theatrical performance is a historical content with passionate fans.
REVUE JAPAN is a night show that is sponsored by OSK Nippon Revue Company, which opened in 1922 as Shochiku Kagekidan. OSK Nippon Revue Company is a theater company that is composed only of women, and all roles are performed by beautifully dressed women.
The REVUE JAPAN performance is unique in the sense that it doesn’t have much dialogue, so foreign visitors can casually enjoy it. Their shows contain many aspects of Japanese arts such as Kabuki and create an exotic atmosphere through song and dance. Also, another nice point about their show is that its only 45 minutes.
A Beautiful Japanese World Unfolds on Stage
The charm of REVUE JAPAN is the program specialized in Japanese beauty. Actors in kimono perform to lively upbeat music.
The show is made so people can casually watch before or after dinner. Since it is a nonverbal show, they have subtitles on the screen when necessary.
The show is full of wonderful Japanese entertainment, such as beautiful actors in kimono performing traditional Japanese dance and exciting sword-fighting scenes by samurais. Also you can take pictures throughout the show, and they even have a designated photo time in the end. It makes a great memory for sightseeing in Osaka. Of course you can post these pictures on various SNS such as Twitter and Instagram.
Enjoy the Dance and Songs Perfected Through Training
The company members of REVUE JAPAN are elites who trained at the company school. Only those who completed the two-year training of song, dance, and acting can stand on the stage.
Since they mastered the basics, they can express beauty with their whole body. You can see the fruit of their training through their powerful dance moves and beautiful poses.
REVUE JAPAN is held at DAIHATSU SHINSAIBASHI KADOZA, it is a relatively small theater that seats 120 people, and you can feel the actors up close. Being able to feel the actors through their performance, it feels as if you are part of the show.
We also recommend checking out the PRECIOUS STONES held on the same day.
REVUE JAPAN specializes in Japanese beauty, but we also recommend PRECIOUS STONES held at 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm on the same day.
The show offers a more flashy entertainment with gorgeous western attire. Especially the way the female actors portray male roles is breathtaking. The ideal man performed by a woman is a gentleman filled with neutral charm, which is an indescribable beauty.
The show has dialogue and no subtitles; however, the show expresses the scene through dance and facial expressions, and it is possible to understand the story. Just watching the gregarious dance is worth it!
