Hokkaido Art Fireworks 2026: Figure Skating Legend Mao Asada Brings Her Artistry to Sapporo’s Night Sky
- Written by: LIVE JAPAN Editor
Heading to Hokkaido in early autumn? This is one event worth putting on your calendar. Hokkaido Art Fireworks 2026, one of Japan’s standout artistic fireworks shows, will light up Moerenuma Park in Sapporo on September 5, 2026.
This year brings an especially exciting collaboration. Japanese figure skating legend Mao Asada will step into a new role as artistic producer for a fireworks performance, working alongside renowned fireworks choreographer Ryo Oya.
Together, they will reinterpret one of the most memorable pieces from Asada’s competitive career, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, First Movement, transforming it into a spectacular nighttime performance where music, figure skating artistry, and traditional Japanese fireworks come together in the sky.

From Ice to the Night Sky: Mao Asada Produces Her First Fireworks Show

Figure skating and artistic fireworks have something special in common: both use music to turn a fleeting moment into an emotional performance. Drawing on her own interpretation of Rachmaninoff, Mao Asada has translated the jumps, spins, footwork, and dramatic crescendos of her skating into a roughly four-minute fireworks piece choreographed to the music.
Asada herself will also appear at the event, taking the stage to share behind-the-scenes stories about how the performance came together.
Where Art Meets Nature: The Spectacular Setting of Moerenuma Park

The fireworks unfold over Moerenuma Park, designed by world-renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi as one enormous work of art. Its sweeping landscapes, sculptural terrain, and wide-open skies create a dramatic natural stage, giving the fireworks an extra sense of scale and depth.

Fireworks Choreographed to Music with 1/30-Second Precision

Unlike a typical fireworks display, these art fireworks are choreographed down to 1/30 of a second using computer-controlled technology. Each launch, burst, and lingering trail of light is precisely synchronized with the rhythm, melody, and instrumentation of the music, creating an immersive spectacle that feels almost like a symphony in the sky.

Viewing Tips & Practical Information
Tickets

Ticket required: There are no free viewing areas at the venue, so advance ticket purchase is required.
Ticket options: Choices include reserved seating such as Premium Seats, as well as unreserved lawn areas. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the official Hokkaido Art Fireworks website or authorized booking platforms.
What to Wear & Bring

Dress for the evening chill: Sapporo can feel cool after dark in September, especially in the wide-open park, so bring a warm jacket or extra layer.
Wear comfortable shoes: Moerenuma Park is extensive, and it takes around 15 minutes to walk from the entrance to the viewing area. Comfortable sneakers are recommended.
Bring rain gear: The event is held in the rain, but umbrellas are not permitted during the fireworks for safety and to avoid blocking views. Be sure to bring a raincoat or poncho.
Useful items: The park can be quite dark at night, so a small flashlight is handy. You may also bring a compact picnic mat, but large folding chairs should be avoided as they can obstruct the view for others.
Getting There
Traffic restrictions will be in place around Moerenuma Park on the day of the event. Visitors are encouraged to use the official round-trip shuttle buses or ticket packages that include transportation.
Depending on the transportation ticket you purchase, you will be directed to enter the park through the designated East, West, or South Gate.
