Shinobazu Pond

This is a large natural pond located at the south end of Ueno Park, with a circumference of about two kilometers. It has been loved by people since ancient times as you can tell from the fact that it was in an Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock print) created in the Edo period. There is Bentenjima Island (Nakanoshima Island) in the center of Shinobazu Pond, and it is divided into three sections: Lotus Pond, Boat Pond, and Cormorant Pond. At Lotus Pond, lotuses come into full bloom every year in July, attracting many visitors in the morning when the flowers open as a beautiful sight in the summer season by the gorgeous contrast of their bright green leaves and large pink flowers. At Boat Pond, you can enjoy boating as the name suggests, and various wild birds live in Cormorant Pond. One of its charms is that the view changes seasonally, as cherry blossoms can be seen in the spring, and waterbirds such as ducks can be seen in the winter. It's a two minute walk from Ueno Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hibiya Lines.
