How to Choose Capsule Hotels to Make Your Ueno Sightseeing Even More Enjoyable

The area around JR Ueno Station is an attractive district of history and artistic culture, featuring various museums and art galleries including the National Museum of Western Art, which is registered as a World Heritage Site. To the south lies the shopping paradise "Ameyoko-cho (Ameya-Yokocho)" with its rows of unique shops, and to the north are diverse tourist spots like Yanesen with its traditional downtown atmosphere.

Capsule hotels are perfect for enjoying 120% of what Ueno has to offer. These compact hotels combine affordable rates that make casual stays possible with comprehensive services including authentic saunas, making them ideal bases for sightseeing, especially for first-time solo travelers.

This time, I researched great travel deals across Japan and selected capsule hotels I would recommend by comparing three key elements: affordability, proximity to the station, and comprehensive services!

Additionally, for women-oriented facilities, I've included style, safety, and cleanliness in the selection criteria, while for men-only capsule hotels, I've focused on the quality of spa & sauna facilities.

1. Smart Stay SHIZUKU Ueno Ekimae

With secure facilities, a spacious bath, sauna, and full amenities, this stay is perfect for women traveling solo

Facility Highlights
  • Safety-focused, separate floors for men and women, IC security system for women's peace of mind
  • Refresh yourself in the large bath and authentic sauna with auto löyly!
  • Comprehensive dedicated facilities and amenities for women's comfort

Smart Stay Shizuki Ueno Ekimae is located just 1 minute walk from Keisei Ueno Station (direct access from Narita Airport via Keisei Skyliner) and a 3-minute walk from JR/Subway Ueno Station. The location offers excellent transportation access and is close to Ueno Shinobazu Pond, Ueno Park, and the Ameya-Yokocho shopping street.

The best thing about this accommodation is that it is a women-friendly capsule hotel. Not only does it have separate floors for men and women, but the entrance is equipped with IC security, women's exclusive changing rooms and lounge, free rental of women's amenities and beauty appliances, all of which provides a well thought-out environment and services that enable women to stay with peace of mind.

Separate large baths and saunas for men and women are also available. The sauna is particularly popular with sauna-loving men as it features auto löyly (self-steaming design). Try alternating between the sauna, cold bath, and resting, a practice that is all the rage in Japan these days!

In the shared lounge, you can relax in comfortable chairs while enjoying free Wi-Fi to do remote work or bring in some food and beverages and enjoy yourself. Unlimited manga and magazines (in Japanese) are also available for your viewing pleasure.

The restaurant offers Japanese staple dishes like curry and oyakodon at reasonable prices, plus various alcoholic beverages.

The facility is completely cashless, using wristbands instead of room keys to manage service usage, with consolidated payment at checkout. The front desk also offers luggage storage service, allowing sightseeing without the hassle of carrying around your luggage, whether it be before or after check-in.

2. GRAN CUSTOMA UENO

With all-day curry, a legit löyly sauna, and safe capsule rooms for women, this stay packs value and comfort in one

Facility Highlights
  • 24-hour free all-you-can-eat curry, unmatched value with affordable accommodation rates
  • Authentic sauna with löyly & spacious large bath for late-night sauna activities
  • Internet cafe-style lounge space with over 10,000 manga volumes

Gran Customa Ueno is located 4 minutes walk from Keisei Ueno Station (convenient for airport access), JR/Subway Ueno Station, and JR Okachimachi Station. Being only a 2-minute walk to the deep shopping paradise Ameya-Yokocho, and within 10 minutes to Shinobazu Pond and various museums in Ueno Park - the location is unquestionably excellent.

This hotel combines an internet cafe, capsule hotel, and spa, offering two types of rooms: capsule rooms and private rooms with workspace. Floors and large baths/saunas are separated by gender for women's safety. Additionally, women's capsule rooms are priced about 600 yen lower than men's rates, which is a nice bonus.

The large bath hosts monthly "Bath Day" events featuring seasonal Japanese baths like yuzu bath, iris bath, and cherry blossom bath. The sauna space offers authentic sauna experiences with aromatic löyly (a sauna design in which aromatic water is poured onto a hot stone to create scented steam) high-temperature sauna combined with a cold bath (※cold bath available in men's bath only).

What I especially recommend is the special perk unique to internet cafe facilities - original curry available 24 hours all-you-can-eat at no additional charge! Of course, popular Japanese manga is also all-you-can-read.

There's direct access from within the hotel to the 24-hour convenience store on the first floor, making it convenient for quick shopping.

3. 1 Night 1980 Yen Hotel Tokyo

This is a capsule hotel with separate floors for men and women that women can use with confidence.

It is located a 5-minute walk from Iriya Station (one station from Ueno) and 15 minutes from JR Uguisudani Station. While slightly removed from central Ueno, its main attraction is the incredibly reasonable price of 1,980 yen per night (excluding tax) - unbeatable value in Tokyo - plus a clean environment!

Particularly noteworthy is that every capsule room comes with a personal lockable large locker measuring 60×60×200cm. Spacious enough to store three or more large suitcases, the locker includes a hanging rod for clothes and electrical outlets. It functions like a mini closet, making it a valuable service for travelers with lots of luggage or souvenirs.

Shower rooms are also separated by gender, with bathtub-equipped bathrooms available for a fee. The rooftop terrace serves as a shared space offering panoramic views of Tokyo's cityscape. The front desk is staffed 24 hours. Guests can freely go out after check-in, with nearby restaurants and a mini supermarket open until 11 PM.

Free amenities, face towels, and bath towels are provided exclusively for women - another welcome service.

The Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 1 is one of Japan's largest men-only capsule hotels with 379 cabins. With various Japanese-themed presentations and modern Japanese design, it creates a space where you can experience Japanese culture while staying at the hotel.

It is located a 4-minute walk from Keisei Ueno Station and 2 minutes from JR/Subway Ueno Station. The popular Ameya-Yokocho is right nearby, and all Ueno Park facilities are within a 10-minute walk - excellent access and a perfect location for sightseeing.

The highlight is definitely the large bath and sauna. You can enjoy bubble baths, vibra baths, and medicinal baths using artificial radium springs that promote metabolism, plus the authentic high-temperature smoke sauna with löyly is extremely popular with foreigners. Free in-house clothing, towels, various amenities, shaving cream, and body milk are all provided for comfortable sauna activities.

All capsule rooms come with TV, and you can choose from three cabin widths: 90cm, 100cm, and 120cm.

The relaxation room features TV-equipped relaxation chairs and massage chairs for unwinding, plus a well-stocked manga corner. Being close to Ameya-Yokocho means no worries about dining and shopping options.

The Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 2 is a capsule hotel located behind the sister property Ueno Station Hostel Oriental 1.

It is a 5-minute walk from JR/Subway Ueno Station and 3 minutes from JR Okachimachi Station, with Ameya-Yokocho right nearby. Positioned in the heart of the entertainment district, it offers convenient access for dining, shopping, and sightseeing.

While the facility is older and more compact compared to Oriental 1, this location receives rave reviews for its high-quality large bath and authentic sauna!

The Showa-style retro large bath with eye-catching ceiling paintings features various tubs using artificial radium springs expected to help with stiff shoulders, back pain, neuralgia, and fatigue recovery. The sauna is an authentic smoke sauna with perfectly balanced high temperature and humidity through löyly, complete with cold bath. Staff-led aufguss (events where steam is stirred with towels) is a specialty, and irregular events by professional löyly performers are must-see. (※Tattooed guests are prohibited from bathing)

The simple and clean capsule rooms all come with TVs. In the relaxation room, you can unwind in TV-equipped reclining chairs after bathing, plus enjoy the manga comic corner with over 2,000 volumes available at all times.

6. [Men Only] Capsule Hotel THE NELL Ueno Okachimachi

  • Two types of large baths with different depths and gentle low-temperature mist sauna
  • Clean and simple capsule rooms with grade options to fit your budget
  • Quiet and peaceful area despite being near station and in the heart of entertainment district

This is a men-only capsule hotel popular for its reasonable pricing and compact yet clean facilities. Located a 5-minute walk from JR/Subway Ueno Station and about 10 minutes from Keisei Ueno Station, it's positioned in central Ueno close to Ueno Park and the Ameya-Yokocho entertainment district, yet maintains a quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

The pride of the hotel is its large bath available 24 hours (except cleaning time 10:00-12:00). There are two types: "shallow bath" where you can stretch your legs and relax, and "deep bath" where you can soak up to your shoulders, both equipped with vibra functions.

On days ending with an 8 each month, they hold bath events with seasonal bath salts. The sauna uses a low-temperature mist sauna system that puts less strain on the body while allowing you to sweat thoroughly. The free drinks station at the bath entrance is also well-received.

Large luggage that doesn't fit in free lockers can be stored in paid lockers for 200 yen. Free amenities including in-house clothing, towels, shaving wash, and men's lotion are all provided for peace of mind.

Note that the hotel has regular closure days, so it's recommended to check the schedule on the official website before your visit. Also, on-site payment is cash only.

This is a men-only capsule hotel recommended as a base for Tokyo sightseeing and shopping.

While located about a 10-minute walk from JR Ueno Station and Ueno's entertainment district, its highly-rated location allows convenient exploration of downtown areas from right in front of Yushima subway station, plus easy access to Akihabara - the center of anime/gaming culture and famous electronics district.

Despite the somewhat retro and compact design, the 24-hour large bath and sauna are popular features. In-house clothing and basic amenities are provided, with unlimited use of bath towels and face towels. The introduction of coffee servers from major coffee chain "Doutor Coffee" allows unlimited free coffee enjoyment - a unique feature here!

The compact capsule rooms all come with TV and charging outlets. They're well-regarded for cleanliness and comfort. Large luggage that doesn't fit in free lockers can be stored at the luggage area in front of the 1st floor front desk.

The surrounding area has multiple convenience stores, and the popular discount souvenir shop Don Quijote Ueno is just 5 minutes walk away, making shopping very convenient. Yushima Tenjin, famous as a shrine dedicated to the god of learning, is 3 minutes walk away, offering opportunities to enjoy historical culture and nature walks.
