Description
This bridge spans the lower reaches of the Sumida River. Built using the latest technology in 1940, it was the finest bascule bridge in the East. A bascule bridge is one that swings upward to allow boat traffic to pass through. This bridge no longer opens or closes but remains as an historic structure representing the Showa era. The museum was created by modifying the substation that was used to control the bridge. Material from the time, including a scale model, is exhibited in eight sections. At night, the arch and deck are illuminated to create a beautiful visual. Tours are conducted regularly of the pier and huge gears (advance reservations required). An eight-minute walk from Tsukijishijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line, or from Katsudoki Station. Since the bridge is close to Ginza, you can do some shopping on the same day.
