One of the world’s most famous cities, Tokyo attracted over 15 million foreign visitors in 2019, just before the pandemic (according to Tokyo government statistics), all wanting to get a piece of Japanese culture, the neon-lit streets, and the delicious food. The megacity is also home to some of the world’s finest hotels, where you can enjoy state-of-the-art and innovative architecture and design intertwined with the deep-rooted Japanese culture.
One of Tokyo’s luxury hotels, mesm Tokyo, Autograph Collection, lies between Tokyo Bay and Sumida River, which is a 5-star hotel that subtly combines contemporary and unique Japanese culture.
We had the pleasure of staying at mesm Tokyo for one night to let you know everything you need to know about one of Tokyo’s finest luxury hotels.
Enter the unique world of mesm Tokyo
mesm Tokyo’s concept is a “commitment to Japan quality, attention to detail, and an innovative place where time and space fascinate the five senses.”
From the moment you walk into the entrance hotel, they achieve just that. The hallway is illuminated with elegant gold guiding you toward the elevator. Combined with the tints of blue, it slowly opens the doorway to mesm’s world.
As you ride the elevator to the 16th floor, mesm’s realm reveals itself. The cobalt blue and gold combined with the mesh-like art installation hanging on the tall ceiling is a sensory delight.
The ambient music and top-class hospitality make you feel relaxed and immersed in the mesm oasis in the bustling Tokyo city. No matter where you look or go, there is something exciting and unique to discover.
Stay at the different chapters of the mesm world
There are 4 types of guest rooms, each separated into different “chapters.” Chapter 1 rooms are located on the 17th to 26th floors, all at 40㎡. These rooms are separated into a single king bed or twin room, perfect for 1-2 person stay. The room is spacious whilst having a cozy feel.
Chapter 2 rooms are also located on the 17th to 26th floors. They are similar to the Chapter 1 rooms but more spacious (43㎡ and 44㎡), allowing you to really enjoy and appreciate all the unique aspects of mesm and the amenities that come with the room.
Chapter 3 rooms can be found on the 18th to 24th floors. These are suite rooms, attached with a living room and dining area, making them the perfect stay for families that want to relax above the Tokyo streets.
Finally, Chapter 4 is the penthouse suite at the top of the hotel. It comes with an added kitchen, where catering events are often held. The 60㎡ balcony boasts some of the most spectacular views of the lush Hamarikyu Gardens and Tokyo Bay beyond.
With a room size of 180 square meters, the suite consists of a living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen space. Chapter 4 is the ultimate hotel experience where you can create many stories during your stay at mesm Tokyo.
Patrons staying at the Chapter 4 penthouse and exclusive Club mesm members have special access to a private bar with free drinks. The quiet and relaxing interior is perfect for those who want to enjoy time inside, the Tokyo scenery on the balcony, or a quiet place to do some work.
Merging modern Tokyo with traditional Japan
The subtle hints through the hotel lounge and rooms help elevate your experience at mesm Tokyo to the next level. Upon entry to each room, guests are welcomed by a blue bear, a Bearbrick and Tokyo Waves collaboration.
The bear is covered in “ninja ink”; when photographed (with flash), the face of a daruma can be seen.
Each room comes with a wide variety of amenities, including a vintage coffee dripper, a keyboard piano and speaker, and complimentary drinks. Whilst most of these might be found in other 5-star hotels, the little extra steps take mesm’s experience to the next level.
The matcha tea ceremony kit, toiletries and snacks were created in collaboration with famous Japanese companies, as has a notepad with a fude brush pen that subtly shows a nod to traditional Japanese customs.
The silk lounge gown is kimono-like with Geta (wooden sandals), and is a beautiful reminder that you are in Japan. Helping suspend cushions at the head of the bed frame are a pair of beautiful red cords that are traditionally used whilst wearing kimonos.
The balance between the stylish contemporary interior with homage to classical Japan was elegant and not gimmicky at all.
Relax in the hotel lounge under the Tokyo lights
The Tokyo skyline sparkles in the city lights during the evening, with the towering Tokyo Skytree® in the center. The lobby and bar, “Whisk,” on the 16th floor, offer a wide arrange of alcoholic drinks, carefully crafted cocktails, and soft drinks designed to resonate with the five senses.
There is a selection of small foods to help you relax with the picturesque Tokyo skyline. On occasion, there is a small performance with live musicians, adding to the classy yet relaxing atmosphere.
What to do around mesm Tokyo
Outside of the hotel, there is even more to explore. The neighboring Hamarikyu Garden is a fantastic nature escape in the city, perfect for a scenic walk. The beautifully styled garden juxtaposes the tall skyscrapers of Tokyo. Speaking of which, the close-by Tokyo Tower is around a 20-minute walk from the hotel.
Marvel at Tokyo’s beacon from below or climb up to the observatory to get a panoramic view of the city. For some traditional Japanese culture, there is also Zojo-ji Temple, just in front of Tokyo Tower.
Just below the hotel, you can view the city from the water. Take a cruise along one of the many boats from Takeshiba Pier, where you can skip across the city, whilst enjoying views of Odaiba and Rainbow Bridge. The staff at mesm Tokyo will also help you organize the cruise of your liking!
JR Hamamatsucho Station, on the Yamanote Line, is around a 10-minute walk away, giving fantastic access to main spots around Tokyo, such as Ueno, Shibuya, and Shinjuku.
