Tsukiji: the kitchen of Japan. While the majority of shops and stores in the area start their business early in the morning and close early in the evening, Tsukiji also has many spots that really come to life during nighttime. Follow us off the beaten path and discover exotic night sceneries and well-established stores frequented by those who run the market during the day.
Explore Tokyo's Largest Shop for Exotic Fish
Paupau Aqua Garden's Ginza store is one of the largest shops for tropical fish in the entire metropolitan area. Beautiful cardinal tetra swim through an amazing variety of aquatic plants in huge fish tanks at the bright entrance of the store. The calm way in which the vivid greenery sways in the sparkling, clear water is mesmerizing.
In the saltwater corner of the store, you can watch some of the ocean's most popular creatures, clownfish and seahorses, frolic to their hearts' desire while killifish and goldfish populate the freshwater tanks.
The calm, soothing atmosphere of this stylish place will make you forget the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Temple Illuminations at Night
One of Tsukiji's main attractions, the temple of Tsukiji Hongan-ji, becomes illuminated once the sun has set. While the entrance is dipped in almost pitch-black darkness, rest assured - security guards guarantee every visitor's safety.
The silhouette of the temple emerging against the dark night creates a very solemn atmosphere. The contrast between the traditional building and the modernity around it give the temple an additional mythical touch. While you might have visited Hongan-ji during the day, the temple seems like an entirely different one during nighttime.
While you cannot enter the temple building at night, do visit the area around the gate - you will not be disappointed. The temple is usually lit-up between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Visit Every Marketer's Favorite Restaurant
Chouseian, located in one corner of the former Tsukiji Market, is a well-established restaurant and a beloved meeting place for marketers with a sophisticated palate - hence, it's particularly hard to score a reservation for it. It is a soba store during the day but at night, it turns into an izakaya with extraordinarily amazing dishes. One delicacy is the store's Dakimashi Tamago, or Japanese omelette, with an exquisite, rich taste. Since it is a soba shop, another one of its specialties is the Sobagaki, a dish made by forming a dumpling out of buckwheat flour, a traditional delicacy that even out dates the classic soba noodles. The soft, sticky dish goes great with various drinks or can simply be enjoyed as a snack.
Apart from snacks, Chouseian also serves complete meals - rich in taste and exquisitely delicious. This restaurant even makes the gourmets of Tsukiji come back for more.

Take in Tsukiji's Nighttime Scenery on the Way Back
The entrance to Tsukiji Station is directly in front of Tsukiji Hongan-ji's front gate. This entrance will lead you to the platform of the train towards Meguro, but the Kita-Senju side of the station is also easily accessible via an underground passageway.
While Tsukiji certainly is an intriguing place during the day, its nighttime scenery has a very unique appeal as well. Do not miss out on the opportunity to have a very different Tsukiji experience and visit the famous district at night!
