One joy of living in Japan is that I get to experience their enthusiasm over “limited edition” and “seasonal” products throughout the year. One fun way to enjoy each season is to have a peek in an ice cream box and see what’s on sale!
This summer, I took on the delicious mission of trying out some new ice cream releases that can be bought at 7-Eleven in Japan. Let’s have a look at what tasty treats have been released over the summer of 2024!

1. Marude Kanjuku Pineapple (Released: August 12th, 2024)
This ice bar from the "Marude" series, which aims to recreate the experience of eating frozen fruit, features a ripe pineapple flavor. It uses "Mottainai Pineapple," a part of the brand's initiative to reduce food waste. The ice bar has two layers: an outer layer with pineapple chunks and a rich, flavorful inner layer.
I have tried several of the flavors in this series - and they all have one thing in common: amazing texture! Soft, creamy and chewy at the same time, like a popsicle with the qualities of a soft cream. In addition to its rich flavor and creamy texture, this ice bar is stunning! In a scale of colors from a deep yellow to a sort of amber-orange, it reminds me of a late summer sunset.
This ice cream really hits the spot, and you might find yourself going back for a second round! (And by that time, they might have come out with even more flavors for you to enjoy!)

2. Imuraya SHALILI Crème Brûlée Ice (Released: August 12th, 2024)
The "SHALILI Crème Brûlée Ice" from the SHALILI series is a limited-edition treat that blends rich and refreshing flavors in a custard ice. Featuring Imuraya’s expertise, this ice cream has a unique four-layer structure offering a delightful "shari" (crunch), "pari" (crisp), and "torori" (creamy) texture. It’s a luxurious ice cream designed to capture the essence of crème brûlée for a decadent experience.
I’d argue the best part of enjoying a nice crème brûlée is to “crack” the top layer with a spoon. To get the same experience with this dessert-inspired ice cream, you might have to let it warm up just a little before trying. Which - let’s be honest - won’t take too long in this summer heat! If you are a fan of the real dessert, this tangy, sweet ice cream with a good crunch to the burnt sugar-flavored coat will not disappoint!

3. Lotte Soh W Ramune (Released: July 1st, 2024)
From the popular "Soh" series known for its crisp texture, the "Soh W Ramune" ice cream has launched as a summer-only item. This refreshing treat offers the dual flavors of soda and grape ramune in one ice cream. Ramune, by the way, is a carbonated soft drink known for its glass bottle sealed with a glass marble, a summer staple for children and adults all over the country. Featuring larger-than-usual finely shaved ice and a cooling ingredient blend, it delivers the taste of chilled ramune for a revitalizing experience.
The ice cream’s soda and ramune flavors are perfect for the current season. It has a frosty texture and works well to cool you down on a hot day. I thought this was an all-in-all fun experience, visually as well as flavor wise!

4. Lotte Coolish Melon Soda Float (Released: July 15th, 2024)
Lotte’s popular "Coolish" ice cream introduces the "Melon Soda Float" flavor, available for a limited time starting July 15. First launched in 2014, this flavor has been a hit, making a comeback for the sixth year! People just can’t get enough. The ice cream captures the refreshing sweetness and aroma of melon soda (another Japanese drink popular with both children and adults), providing a sensation of fizzy carbonation for a truly satisfying experience reminiscent of a melon soda float.
This is a very convenient dessert on a hot summer day - packaged in a bag with a sealable cap, allowing you to enjoy it at your own pace without worrying about getting melted ice cream all over your hands! I usually try to dig down in the ice box and grab one at the bottom - they are a bit cooler and will allow you to enjoy all stages of the experience, from its initial frosty sensation to a more creamy texture when it starts to melt from the heat of your hands. An all-around fun and delicious experience!

5. Häagen-Dazs Beniichigo -Kanjuku- (Released: July 23rd, 2024)
Häagen-Dazs celebrates its 40th anniversary with a special edition strawberry ice cream, "Beniichigo -Kanjuku-," launched on July 23. This luxurious treat features carefully selected fully ripe strawberries, creating a rich and intense strawberry flavor with a deep red color. The addition of strawberry vinegar enhances the fruity essence, delivering an even more robust strawberry experience. Taking a scoop of the ice cream, you’ll find small chunks of tart strawberry inside!
This creamy dessert was as sweet as I expected, a safe bet if you are looking for something to satisfy your sugar cravings! I think that this ice cream would be enjoyed best in a relaxed state on a park bench or on a picnic sheet under the shade of a tree, as opposed to as a quick cool-me-down to grab as you go about your day.

Whew, that was a lot of ice cream! Japan really is a great place to enjoy seasonal flavors. I should note that these products are seasonal and, therefore, limited edition, so if you are planning a trip to Japan within the next couple of weeks, make sure to head over to your nearest 7-Eleven store and grab one before they’re gone! If you do find yourself just missing out on these limited treats, don’t worry too much. I can guarantee you there will be other fun, seasonal treats to try!
