Goshuin are believed to date back to the Heian period (794–1185). Originally, they were issued as a receipt when worshippers offered hand-copied sutras (shakyo) to temples. These early forms were known as nokyo-in (sutra offering seals).
By the Edo period, travel became more common among the general public, and goshuin began to spread as a way of marking a temple or shrine visit. Today, they are appreciated not only as records of pilgrimage, but also for their calligraphy and design, often seen as a distinctive form of Japanese visual culture.

Starting April 25, 2026, this event introduces limited-edition goshuin themed around seasonal flowers. Each temple and shrine offers its own design, making them a memorable keepsake from the journey.
Another highlight is hana-chozu, where the water basins used for ritual purification are decorated with flowers that would otherwise be discarded. Some locations feature evening illuminations, offering a different atmosphere after dark.

Kuhombutsu Joshinji Temple, founded in 1678, is known for its nine large golden Buddha statues set across the grounds. The setting is calm and spacious, with a strong sense of history. After visiting, Jiyugaoka is a convenient stop for a break, with a wide range of cafés and dessert shops to explore.

Todoroki Fudoson sits within the only valley in Tokyo’s 23 wards. The surrounding greenery and nearby stream create a noticeably quieter environment compared to the city streets above. It’s an easy place to slow down and take in a different side of Tokyo.

The participation kit, which serves as a guide for the event, is available at 17 major Tokyu Line stations. It includes a guidebook and a dedicated folder for collecting goshuin. The event covers 55 temples and shrines. Visiting 28 locations earns a small pouch, while completing all 55 sites comes with a commemorative tote bag.
