Safe and Comfortable Summer in Japan! Sunscreen, Cooling Hacks & Other Child-Friendly Summer Essentials
- Written by: Chehui Peh
Summer in Japan is full of family-friendly fun, from outdoor festivals, park picnics, to beach adventures. But with strong UV rays, high humidity, and the inevitable mosquito bites, it’s essential to keep your little ones protected and comfortable.
We stopped by Don Quijote Shibuya, a favorite one-stop shop for locals and travelers alike, to scout out the most popular and staff-recommended summer essentials for children. Whether you’re traveling with toddlers or energetic grade-schoolers, here are some must-haves to keep in your bag this season.

Gentle Sunscreens for Delicate Skin

Japan’s summer sun can be intense, and protecting children’s sensitive skin requires the right kind of care. Luckily, there are kid-specific sunscreens that are both effective and gentle.

Bioré UV for Kids Pure Milk is a top choice at 968 yen, made with a mineral-based milk formula that’s ethanol and paraben-free. It goes on easily and provides a high level of protection without irritating the skin.
Another family-friendly option is Kiss Me Mommy UV Mild Gel (990 yen), which is 90% food-grade ingredients, additive-free, and designed to be low-irritation; perfect for babies and young kids. You can even use it on yourself if you’re looking for a safe, no-fuss sunscreen.

If your kids prefer something a little cuter, look for the Hiyocoat UV Gel (968 yen), shaped like an adorable yellow chick. This milk-gel hybrid sunscreen is both fun and functional, with SPF35 protection in a playful package your child will love.
Keep the Bugs Away: Mosquito Protection

Japan’s summer brings not just heat but mosquitoes, especially near parks, rivers, and grassy areas. Here are a few child-safe products to keep the bugs at bay:

For a hands-free option, try the Kaorings, silicone mosquito-repellent bands that double as cute accessories (from 549 yen). These come in fun colors and designs, so your child will enjoy wearing one out and about.

The Skin Vape Mist Angel Premium (1,188 yen) is a bestseller for families. Safe for both adults and kids, it offers long-lasting mosquito protection in a gentle mist spray. It’s especially handy for covering arms, legs, or even clothing during outdoor outings.

If your child does get bitten, reach for Muhi Baby (968 yen), a soothing cream designed for sensitive skin. They also have liquid versions, sprays, and bulk packs to suit different needs and situations.

For an extra dose of fun (and relief), the Muhi Patch cooling stickers (from 614 yen) feature cute characters and can be placed directly on itchy spots.
Beat the Heat: Cooling Solutions for Kids

Keeping cool is just as important as staying protected. With Japan’s hot and humid summer weather, children can overheat quickly—so having child-friendly cooling items on hand is key.

Start with child-size Atsusama Sheets or cooling gel sheets (384 yen), which can be placed on their forehead or neck during breaks at the park, after sports, or anytime they need to cool down.

One of the trendiest and most effective ways to stay cool is the cooling neck ring. These kid-specific styles (from 2,640 yen) come in fun patterns and are designed to be stored in the fridge or freezer. Once chilled, they offer a comfortable, cooling experience around the neck, great for travel days or time outdoors. You could also pour cold water into the neck ring while out to maintain its coolness.

Donki also sells cooled drinks!

Green tea is a popular go-to for Japanese families in summer.
