Fukagawa Hachiman Festival (Water Throwing Festival)
Description
It is counted as one of the three major Edo festivals, along with the Sanno Festival at the Hie Shrine in Akasaka and the Kanda Festival at Kanda Myojin. The Fukagawa Hachiman Festival is an annual festival of Tomioka Hachimangu and is held mainly on August 15 every year. It is called the ”main festival” in the year when the Otori Shrine of Hachimangu is held every third year, and the gathering and procession of 53 portable shrines known as 'mikoshi' is most impressive.
A main feature is the traditional shouting of ”Wasshoi, Wasshoi” and the throwing of water by spectators symbolizing purification, known also as the ”Water Throwing Festival”, enables the spectators to become part of the event, making this an Edo festival that is carefully maintained to this day.
