Description
Suga Shrine has been located in Yotsuya, Tokyo since the early Edo period and is the tutelary shrine of 18 towns of Yotsuya.
The annual festival held in June was called the “Tenno Matsuri” in Yotsuya in the old days, and was known as one of the five major festivals in Edo. The name “Suga” is based on the historical allusion that Susano-o-no-mikoto killed and ate a giant snake that had eight heads and eight tails at the upstream of the Hi River in the Land of Izumo, declaring “I have come to this land and my heart is sugasugashi (refreshed).” and occupied the shrine.
