Getting to Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing - a 5-minute walk from Asakusa station!
Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing is a five-minute walk from exit A5 of Asakusa Station on the Toei Asakusa line, or a three-minute walk from exits 4 or 5 from Asakusa Station on the Ginza Subway line.
Situated right next to Solamachi, Tokyo Mizumachi is right next to Asahi Super Dry Hall, topped with the eye-catching Asahi golden flame.
Once you’ve crossed the Azumabashi Bridge, you’ll see the futuristic-looking Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing. The architecture is sophisticated and eye-catching, almost like an art museum.
The shops here are managed by Super Dry, one of the subsidiaries of the beer maker Asahi Beer, and it is run as a restaurant with its own brewery.
It is a shop with a long history, having started beer production in 1995 in the heart of Tokyo.
The shop interior is decorated in tones of brown, for a calm atmosphere full of character. You can enjoy casual dining and drinks here. The menu has meat dishes as its mains, and you can enjoy the marriage of beer with different meats.
From the restaurant, you can see brewing vats that are in use. It’s one of the draws of Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing, where you can see something a little out of the ordinary. There are terrace seats too, so you can gaze over the streets of Asakusa, while sipping on some fine beer.
Must-tries at Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing: Recommended food items and beer!
Now, we’ll get to introducing recommended dishes and beers!
From the left, we have the Azamabashi Pale Ale, the Bitter Stout, Aromatic Weizen, and the Kolch Style. These are craft beers specially brewed for the best combination of character and ease of drinking.
・Azamabashi Pale Ale, 880 yen
This is an amber-colored beer served in a round glass. Brewed in the image of an American pale ale, it uses fragrant cascade hops from America. With a mildly bitter taste, it has a uniquely refreshing flavor with notes of citrus.
・Bitter Stout, 650 yen
A black beer made from stringently chosen 100% bitter hops. Known for its thickness and high-quality bitterness.
・Aromatic Weizen, 700 yen
A white beer with a fruity taste and aroma that spreads throughout your mouth. With a gentle flavor that’s easy to drink, it’s popular amongst the ladies.
・Kölsch Style, 700 yen
Using Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing’s flavor as its base, the taste was improved upon to create this flagship beer. The beer is unexpectedly refreshing, with a light aftertaste that anyone will find enjoyable. Those who dislike the bitter after taste of beers can give this beer a shot too.
We recommend trying the taster set of the four beers. It costs 1,680 yen.
As each one has a different flavor profile, you definitely would not think of all of them as the same “beer”! Do try and compare them, and enjoy the most of your time at Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing.
Three dishes that you can enjoy in a marriage with beer
The “Half-Chicken Spice Roast,” which makes liberal use of herbs such as rosemary and thyme, costs 1,480 yen.
With an exterior that is crispy and fragrant while maintaining a soft and juicy interior, this roast chicken is perfect as an accompaniment! Despite its large serving size, the spiciness of the herbs and spices whets your appetite, and even the ladies won’t have problems finishing the entire dish.
It goes perfectly with beer, and is an especially good pairing with the Kölsch Style! The refreshing and smooth beer, together with the fragrant meat dish, makes for a perfect pair.
The “Grain-fed Australian Beef Roast Steak” costs 1,980 yen. The juicy beef steak is served with a spicy sauce, mixed with garlic and onions. Once you’ve taken a bite, the juices spill out and spread throughout your mouth, making it the number one dish for those who love meat.
This dish goes best with the Azamabashi Pale Ale! The smooth and rich beer makes the beef taste even better.
“Fish and chips,” at 880 yen. Made using white-meat fish loaded with sweet fat, one of the hidden flavors in the crispy batter is Super Dry Beer. The refreshing taste leaves you wanting more and more. Do try it out with tartar sauce!
This dish is best paired with Azamabashi Pale Ale. The thick and bitter beer is perfect with fried food!
For those who aren’t good with the bitterness of beer, the dish goes great with Aromatic Weizen and Kölsch Style too.
If you’re in Asakusa for sightseeing, make it a set with gourmet food too!
Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing is located between Tokyo Skytree and Asakusa Kaminarimon, making it a convenient location to get to when sightseeing. After spending your morning in Asakusa, you can have lunch at Solamachi at the Skytree, or at Mizumachi... that’s the recommended schedule.
The place is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. (last food order at 9:30 p.m., last drink at 10:00 p.m.). To prevent the spread of Covid-19, business hours have been shortened to 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (closed from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays). Besides lunch and dinner, you can have a short rest there too.
As all menus are available with English translations as well, those who are not confident with their Japanese can visit with ease.
In line with measures to prevent infection, the store is only operating at 50% maximum capacity, and disinfection and ventilation is also done regularly. For those who are especially worried, you can choose to dine at terrace seats instead.
Having some spicy meat dishes and cold beer after a tiring day is a sure way to make better memories of your trip! For those interested, do check out Tokyo Sumidagawa Brewing.
