Description
Kashi-ya (snack vendors) Street in Kawagoe is a must-see. The street is said to date back to the early Meiji Era, when some vendors began making snacks at inexpensive prices for ordinary folks in Kawagoe. There were once over 70 stores here; now 22 stores line either side of the colourful cobbled-glass street. The cries of vendors and eager onlookers resonate throughout this simple and warm-hearted neighbourhood, which is always crowded. The nostalgic aroma in the street was one of the Kaori Fukei (scent and scenery) Top 100 in 2001. Snacks made by traditional methods keep attracting both children and grownups.
