Description
Chichibu Yomatsuri is a famous religious service at Chichibu Shrine and one of Japan's three major float festivals along with Kyoto Gion Festival and Hida Takayama Festival. It developed in the mid-Edo period with the silk trade, when Chichibu was a centre of production. The festival, held every December 3, is packed with spectators enjoying the gorgeous kasaboko (large umbrellas adorned with halberds) and yatai (floats) paraded through the streets, followed by grand fireworks illuminating the evening skies. Floats, curtains, sculptures, historical material and live performances can all be viewed at Chichibu Matsurikan. The main attraction is a festival re-enactment featuring high-tech lighting and a powerful ensemble. An 11-minute walk from Seibu Chichibu Station on the Seibu Chichibu Line.
