NYK Maritime Museum

日本郵船歴史博物館

Description

The NYK Maritime Museum introduces the history of Japanese maritime transportation from its beginning to the present mainly by using videos. The permanent exhibits are materials such as photographs that captured historical turning points, pamphlets of luxury liners from the early Showa period (1926 – 1989), the silverware that was used for the onboard dinner, and models of ships. Each of these items tells its stories. You can see Japan's pathway to modernization from the viewpoint of maritime history and the history of Nippon Yusen, which had established a status as the world's leading shipping company during the turbulent times. There is a rest area where you can sit down, relax, and look at the displays and an orientation room whose walls are covered with pictures of 800 ships owned by Nippon Yusen (NYK) and 1,500 maritime-related books that are accessible to the visitors. At the museum shop are sold original goods including the popular passenger ship Asuka-related merchandise. It is a two-minute walk from the Minato Mirai Line Basha-michi Station. It is also within walking distance from the JR Negishi Line Sakuragi-cho Station or the Kan’nai Station.
