Yamagata's name is said to have originated from the town name of "Yamagata," written in a set of different Chinese characters. The characters mean "near the mountains," and the name has been used since the Middle Ages. The area abounds with natural beauty and scenic views including Zao, one of Japan's 100 Most Famous Mountains. Zao is home to the "Juhyo," or "ice monsters," that form in winter under Zao's unique weather conditions, and is the only place you can see them.

From August 24 to 26 The Shinjo Festival

Continuing a tradition lasting more than 260 years, the Shinjo Festival attracts around half a million visitors to a town of about 40,000. The highlight of this festival is the parade of 20 festival floats with musical accompaniment. Many visitors also fly in from abroad to witness this festival, registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, with their own eyes.
