Koiwai Farm

Established in 1891, this all-round private farm is famous for its dairy products such as LTLT (low-temperature long-time pasteurized) milk. The enormous property covers an area twice the size of Haneda Airport, and its tourist area Makiba-En is one of the Iwate’s best-known sightseeing spots.
At the farm you’ll find a large cherry tree that’s over 100 years old, known the Koiwai Farm Cherry Tree. Its lonely silhouette with Mt. Iwate in the back draws the attention of many a visitor.
If an authentic farm landscape is on your list of things to see, head to the sheep grazing zone for an idyllic view of sheep munching away on the fields. At certain times every day you can sheep being fed, and watch sheepdogs and shepherds skillfully round them up.
Makiba-En also offers various guided tours that give you a sneak peek at the usually off-limits production areas. The ”Enjoy nature on a tractor train” tour will take you to closed forests. The ”Walking tour to see important cultural properties of Kamimaru Gyusha (Kamimaru Cowshed),” meanwhile, is a great way to see the dairy cows and the modern cowshed of Kamimaru Gyusha, where Koiwai Farm’s dairy farming started, and a certified important cultural property.
