This museum was established in March 2003 with 3 designers, Issei Miyake (fashion designer), Taku Sato (graphic designer), and Naoto Fukazawa (product designer) as its directors and Noriko Kawakami, a journalist and editor, as its associate director. Not only does it offer exhibitions, but it also offers various programs such as talks and workshops with a concept of "becoming a venue where day-to-day perspectives and views can be proposed." The building with a symbolic roof created with an image of "one sheet of fabric" was designed by Tadao Ando, an architect.

The National Art Center Tokyo was opened in January 2007 as the 5th National Museum. Now, the unique and artistic contoured architecture is a symbol of Roppongi. Since its opening in 1961, Suntory Museum of Art has been loved by many fans. After moving to Tokyo Midtown, the museum has been holding exhibitions with various aspects focusing on Japanese Antiques with its theme of "Beauty in Everyday Life". More than 3,000 items are in its collection such as: paintings, potteries, glass arts, and textile works. Among them, 1 national treasure, 13 important cultural properties, and 21 designated important arts created in the period of Heian to Edo (around 800 to 1800) are also included.

This museum conserves and exhibits arts collected by the Sumitomo family, with its main building located in Shishiga-tani, Kyoto.
