Koyasan Okunoin Kobo Daishi Mausoleum

高野山奥之院 弘法大師御廟

Description

Kobo Daishi, or Kukai, founded Mount Koya around 1200 years ago in 816. He went into eternal meditation (nyujo) 29 years later, retaining his lotus position, at the current mausoleum in the innermost area of Okunoin. It is said that Kobo Daishi continues to help believers while meditating in the mausoleum even today, making Okunoin the center of Kobo Daishi worship. The approx. 2 km path from Ichinohashi to the mausoleum is filled with as many as 200,000 tombs, and memorial towers and monuments.
