Description
Legend has it that this temple got its start during the reign of Emperor Nintoku, when an stranded Indian priest found a Kannon Bosatsu statue in the waters of Nachi Falls, placing the statue here. Up until the ordinance to distinguish Shinto and Buddhism was issued in the Meiji era, this shrine flourished alongside Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine as a place for syncretic religious practice.
