From researching sightseeing spots to looking up local eateries you want to try, Wi-Fi is an indispensable resource while traveling.
This article will introduce shops where you can rent Wi-Fi routers right near Osaka Station, the starting point to any Osaka sightseeing trip.
Use Wi-Fi effectively to make the most of your travels around Osaka!
Before You Rent, Check Out Osaka Station's Free Wi-Fi Spots
While traveling, whether you can access the internet or not is an important factor.
First, we will introduce the free, public, wireless LAN service geared toward foreign visitors located in Osaka Station City, adjacent to Osaka Station (service is available to everyone regardless of country of citizenship in the event of a large-scale disaster). The service is provided on the JR Osaka Station platforms and the 1st and 3rd floor ticket gate areas, as well as the 3rd floor of Osaka Station City North Gate building near the information center.
Connecting to the Wi-Fi is easy. First, before the day of your visit, send a blank email to "firstname.lastname@example.org", and wait for your guest code to be emailed back to you. After you arrive, go to one of the 11 service areas, including within JR Osaka Station and at the adjoining Osaka Station City, in the "Atrium Plaza" on the 2nd floor, the 5th floor "Toki-no-Hiroba" (Time and Space Plaza), and the 14th floor "Tenku-no-Noen" (Sky Farm). Then, select the SSID "JR-WEST Wi-Fi", and simply log in to use the service.
Even if you haven't received your guest code, you can go to the information center on the 3rd floor of Osaka Station City North Gate Building and get help connecting to the Wi-Fi there.
Router Rental Services Affiliated with Osaka Station
Wi-Fi router rental services are also provided at the information center on the 3rd floor of Osaka Station City North Gate Building. To register, submit the passport of one traveler, complete the application form, and pay by credit card. You can rent a Wi-Fi router for 1296 yen (tax included) per day and use unlimited internet access on up to 14 devices simultaneously. A 10000 yen deposit is required for each device.
Since you can return the routers primarily at specified airport service counters (Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, Kansai International Airport, Chubu Centrair International Airport, Fukuoka Airport), the ability to use the Wi-Fi until the very end of your trip is very convenient.
Don't forget to take advantage of the benefits of the router rentals affiliated with Osaka Station.

Cheap and Convenient "Wi-Fi Channel"
“Wi-Fi Channel, Osaka Umeda Shop" is a Wi-Fi router rental store located inside the Osaka Ekimae 2nd Building, accessible via a 5-minute walk through the underground shopping center from JR Osaka Station. If there are routers available, you can receive one directly from the shop without a reservation within the 10 minutes it takes to sign a contract. Once your contract period is over, simply place all your rented items into the return letter pack envelope (360 yen, tax not included) and put it into a post office box anywhere in Japan. It is also possible to return the devices directly at the shop.
There are two types of routers to rent, one for 500 yen and one for 450 yen (neither include taxes). The 500 yen device is a high capacity router with the capability for up to 10 GB of data per day. With the 450 yen device, if you exceed 30 GB of data per month, there will be a speed limitation applied by the carrier, but it also has a high capacity battery of up to 12 hours of battery life, so the ability to use it without needing to charge is one benefit. Either router can be connected to up to 10 devices, so if you won't be viewing movies or other high data transmission media, then the 450 yen device may be sufficient.

"Any Fi", Stocked with Even Unlimited Data Volume Devices
"Y!mobile Umeda OS" is located near Osaka Station, across the road from "Hankyu Men's Osaka" and next to a game center. There, you can sign up for services from "Any Fi", a Wi-Fi router rental company. You can visit the store without a reservation, and simply fill out the application form with your name, address, contact information, and email address, and show your passport or other ID. You can pay the fee by cash or credit card, and after an explanation of how to operate the device and confirmation that it works, the process is done. You can get access to an online environment in as few as five minutes.
There are two types of routers to rent - the "501HW" with unlimited data capacity, and the "GL06P" which you can use for up to 25 GB of data per month. The "501HW" is 2760 yen for up to 2 days, 4140 yen for 3 days, 5520 yen for 4 days, and up (all prices tax included). You can connect to Wi-Fi continuously for approximately 10 hours and connect simultaneously on up to 10 devices. This router's featured asset is the guaranteed unlimited and high speed internet.
The "GL06P" costs 1960 yen for up to 2 days, 2940 yen for 3 days, 3920 yen for 4 days, and up (all prices tax included). You can connect to the internet for approximately 12 consecutive hours and connect simultaneously on up to 10 devices. The benefit to choosing this router is the low cost. Either model can be paid for same-day at the store.
With a little effort, like utilizing Wi-Fi hotspots and stopping at the minimum required internet usage, and refraining from streaming videos, the low-cost "GL06P" should be sufficient. Built into each device's pricing is the "Puchi Anshin Pack" insurance which ensures that the store will pay for 30% of the router and accessories in case of water damage or loss, so you can have a safety net in case of any mishaps. You can return the routers either at the shop or by mailing it in a return envelope (additional cost 1080 yen, tax included).
Use a Wi-Fi router smartly to get the most of your trip to Osaka!
