Akishinodera Temple

秋篠寺

Description

Akishinodera Temple is famous for its standing statue of Gigeiten, considered a muse of the orient. This is Japan's only ancient statue of Gigeiten, the patron god of the arts. The temple was built in 780 at the end of the Nara period. The most impressive structure is the main hall, which—though remodeled in the Kamakura period—retains its Tenpyo era appearance.
